An interesting and informative collection casting light on a generally-overlooked aspect of the Great War. ONE. Notebook in the autograph of Mrs A. M. Driberg Uckfield Lodge Crowborough Sussex.80pp. 12mo. Stitched in original black cloth covers. Filled with lists of batches of items posted by Mrs Driberg to various allied prisoners of war between June 1915 and February 1916. Names include ‘Private Wilson’ ‘Leon Beldé’ ‘Private Timothy O’Brien’ ‘Rifleman Jones’ and ‘J. Richardson’. The first entry is representative: ‘Parcel to Jones Contents 2 cakes chocolate 1 E. Rock 1 Shortbread 1 Soap ¼ lb. baccy sic 1 pipe 1 water brush 1 writing case 1 socks 1 shirt 1 Handks. Postage 1/7 Posted 11/6/15’. Mrs Driberg was presumably responding to requests from prisoners and items include strawberry jam shortbread ginger nuts lime juice drops bivouac cocoa sardines beef cakes cigarettes sausages spiced beeef mint ovals ‘tropical chocs’ and towel and washing glove. An early note reads: ‘Prisoners of War Private G. Wilson 9143 1st. South Stafford Regt. Kriegs-gefangenen-Lager I. Illustrated with four engraved plates with tissue-guards beautifully hand-coloured by Lazaretti. 394pp. A very good copy the binding square and firm with some loss to the spine label rubbing to the spine and joints and wear to the corners. The contents with an old water mark to the top margin of the first 60 pages or so a few small stains to the edges of pp.261-268 and some light scattered foxing are otherwise in very good order. The plates themselves are clean and bright the colours remaining vivid. The fifth volume from this wonderfully illustrated Italian edition of Cook's voyages published between 1816 and 1817 which ultimately comprised seven volumes. The title translates as "Cook's Navigations on the Great Ocean and Around the Globe to serve as an introduction to the collection of the most interesting voyages undertaken after that famous Navigator in various parts of the world". The present volume predominantly concerns Cook's second voyage undertaken between 1772 and 1775 and so largely focusses on New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Milano: Sonzogno e Comp. hardcover

Good on lightly-aged paper with one corner of the first leaf cut away. The letter is addressed to 'My dear Sir' without any indication of the recipient's identity. Foss begins: 'It is so long ago since I studied the Rebellion that I forget what I may have learned relative to John Cooke he never having been an English Judge and therefore not falling within my design.' He follows this with information relating to Cooke and Edmund Prideaux to his appointment as a Justice of the Upper Bench in Ireland and to his betrayal with references to Whitelocke's Memorials and the State Trials.
