Two Parts. pp. 56: 48. Illustrated with top margin woodcuts. 4to. Original full purple cloth binding. Edges sun faded. Owned by Judge Mayer Sulzberger (1843-1923). XLib. [Dropsie College]. Scarce reprint of the rare original 1700's edition. Interesting poems describing public houses (Pubs) in London and Westminister during the 1700's. Describes the kinds of beers they served and the sorts of people that frequented them. Wood cut images accompany each verse. Ward (1667-1731), was a humourist, of `low extraction' and with little education. In early life he visited the West Indies, and afterwards he began business as a publican in Moorfields. By 1699 he had moved to Fulwood's Rents, where he kept a punch-shop and tavern (probably the King's Head), next door to Gray's Inn, until his death. Giles Jacob (Poetical Register, 1723) says: `Of late years he has kept a public-house in the city (but in a genteel way), and with his wit, humour, and good liquor, has afforded his guests a pleasurable entertainment; especially the high-church party. A man of considerable natural parts and with a gift of humour, `Ned Ward,' as he is frequently called, imitated Butler's `Hudibras' both in his style and in his attacks on the Whigs and low-church party. Though vulgar and often grossly coarse, his writings throw considerable light on the social life of the time of Queen Anne, and especially on the habits of various classes in London; but much allowance has to be made for exaggeration" - DNB. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Manuscript note in volume one: "Bought at Poynder Sale. June 1855. Sotheby. Lot 67. 1L. This is probably John Poynder (1779-1849) - but his very valuable library was apparently sold by Sotheby in 1850. 'Barnabae Itinerarium, or Barnabee's Journal' is the most famous of poet Richard Brathwaite's (1588?-1673). It appeared in 1638 under the pseudonym 'Corymbaeus.' It is a sparkling record of English travel, in Latin and English verse. It was neglected in its own age, but being reprinted under the title of 'Drunken Barnaby's Four Journeys,' achieved a considerable success during the eighteenth century, and is still in some vogue. The authorship was not ascertained until the publication of the seventh edition by Joseph Haslewood in 1818. Previously supposed authors were known as: Corymbaeus; Philogenes Pandonius; Musaeus Palatinus; Clitus-Alexandrinus. Southey pronounced the original the best piece of rhymed Latin in modern literature. There are great details of 17th century English social life, and drinking customs. Edward Stillingfleet (1635-1699) was a British theologian and scholar. Considered an outstanding preacher as well as a strong polemical writer defending Anglicanism, Stillingfleet was known as "the beauty of holiness" for his good looks in the pulpit, and was called by John Hough "the ablest man of his time". Here he makes a study of the "divine authority" of the Bible and hence of its truth and historical reliability in all matters; with an answer to the modern objections of atheists and deists. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Engraved bookplate of Alexander Uffey. ** FROM THE HARRY S. TRUMAN LIBRARY: Embossed stamp of the 'Harry S. Truman Library / Independence Missouri' and the 'Surplus / Duplicate' stamp of the Library of Congress. Warren was an English lawyer who gained fame for his arguments against the insanity defense. Starting in 1830, he contributed regular ly to Blackwood's Magazine. His great success was 'Ten Thousand a Year' which ran in Blackwood's October 1839 to August 1841. It was one of the most popular novels of the century. Defying public sentiment, critics complained of the banality of the moralizing and the extravagance of the humor. Most contem poary readers, on the other hand, found the sketches of farcical characters boldly drawn and the caricatures clearly developed. Warren lived on the fame of this work for decades. For some reason, this particular edition is scarce. Of course, this set gains added interest in having come from U.S. President Truman's library. "There is probably no man living, though ever so great a fool, that cannot do 'something' or other well" -- Samuel Warren. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W148
