A full-spectrum presentation of medical science as it was in the early 1900s. Edited by Sir William Osler, often considered the father of modern medicine. Each volume contains approximately 900 pages and an index. Volumes I through III printed in 1907, volumes IV and V in 1908, volume VI in 1909 and volume VII in 1910. Numerous colour and black and white plates. Black and white diagrams. Full leather bindings. Two maroon labels with gilt lettering upon each backstrip. Each volume approximately 10" high by 7" wide by 2.75" thick. Of particular note are eight graphic full-page time-lapse photos illustrating the progressive ravages of smallpox upon a middle-aged man, and his appearance after recovery. All bindings stout and strong. Hairline opening along front hinge of volume I. Underlining on relatively few pages in light ink and pencil. Two volumes unmarked. Minimal marginalia on only a handful of pages. Minor evidence of moisture exposure to part of fore-edge of approximately fifty pages in volume VII. A quality example of this magnificent set. 15864Women's Field Hockey. A compelling and comprehensive 19 piece photographic collection of girls and women in field hockey from circa 1900 to 1935. The archive consists of 14 large photos sized approximately 8" x 10" and 6" x 8"; and 5 smaller photos measuring 5" x 7" and 4" x 6." Although played throughout Europe for hundreds of years as a sport for men field hockey was first introduced to the United States in 1901 as a women's sport by a visiting Englishwoman. <br/><br/>The earliest pieces in our archive document organized girls' teams already in existence at the beginning of the twentieth century. Field hockey was an immediate success as a sport for American college women and was further promoted and developed by the formation of the United States Field Hockey Association in 1922. Our archive includes dynamic action shots from this important time period capturing inter-city and collegiate play both in the U.S. and Britain in which the developing intensity speed and skill of the female athletes is fully apparent. Also included are posed team portraits of Swarthmore College Wellesley Mills College Rosemont College and the United States Touring Team and a fascinating photograph of a 1933 match in which girls played against boys in Oxford England. Some pieces show light edgewear wrinkling or light staining; in general the condition is very good. Sie studierte als eine der ersten Frauen von 1906 bis 1908 an der Münchner Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt für Photographie und war Schülerin des deutsch-amerikanischen Piktorialisten Frank Eugene. 197016443JCulver City: Metro-Golwyn-Mayer Studios 1970s. The original "Myrna Loy Building" metal sign from the M.G.M. Hollywood Studio lot. In the 1970s the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio started naming various buildings after their classic film stars. Myrna Loy was alive and well at the time of the naming of her building. This sign was acquired by a gentleman who worked as a carpenter on the lot for many years. His accompanying letter reads: During the middle 1980's 85 to 89 I Michael McGovern worked at the old M.G.M. lot Studios in Culver City California in the Permanent Construction Dept. The lot was sold several times in this time frame. At one point before the now Sony Studios it was owned and named Lorimar Telepictues. When the lot was Lorimar Telepictures they were painting and changing the M.G.M. lot to the new Lorimar "look." Thus the signs Blue and Gold naming the building after the old M.G.M. stars were taken down and replaced with the new signs brown and white that matched the Lorimar colors. I asked my boss if it was OK to keep the signs I changed and he said it was fine with him. Myrna Loy is best known for her portrayal of "Nora Charles" in six Thin Man films with William Powell of the 1930s but also starred in Manhattan Melodrama Libeled Lady Test Pilot The Best Years of our Lives Cheaper by the Dozen and From the Terrace. Her film career spanned more than 50 years Accompanied by a copy of Mr. McGovern's "Prop Maker" ID card. The sign measures 18 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches and presents with some obvious wear from the elements like extremely small areas of rust and signs of use overall in excellent condition. Today the studio lot is owned by Sony and it houses both Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures. The Myrna Loy Building which was the old MGM sound department exists and it still proudly bears her name.
