Depuis, le prix du sel variait de un à dix dès qu'on passait de cette province «rédimée» aux provinces limitrophes dites de grande gabelle, Anjou, Touraine. Berry, ce qui générait naturellement un important trafic. Dans la zone «des cinq lieues», de chaque côté des frontières des provinces, sévissaient les gabelous. Cette police privée fouillait maisons et particuliers, traquant sans cesse les faux-sauniers. Une multitude d'anecdotes, tirées des archives judiciaires, révèle la variété des modes de contrebande. Lorsqu'ils étaient pris, les faux-sauniers étaient en général emprisonnés, condamnés à de lourdes amendes, fouettés sur les marchés, marqués au fer rouge et envoyés aux galères puis au bagne. Les petits «porte à col» avec leur sel sur le dos et les grandes bandes à cheval affrontaient les gabelous en rivalisant de ruse et d'audace, tant au passage des gués de la Creuse et de la Vienne que dans les chemins perdus du Châtelleraudais, du Loudunais, du Thouarsais ou du Mirebalais. La plupart des lecteurs de la moitié nord de la Vienne, de l'est des Deux-Sèvres, du sud de l'Indre-et-Loire et de l'ouest de l'Indre découvriront des épisodes de faux-saunage dans leurs villages et les origines d'une tradition orale qui, dans ce domaine, reste encore vivace." In 1905 Fifield re-issued the work under the present title without the portrait and bibliographical appendix, but with a new preface.
