1926R5107Moscow: Uzel 1926. Limited Edition. Paperback. Near Fine. Original grey wraps printed paper label tipped onto front cover; pp. 28. From a limited edition of 700 copies among the smallest print runs of any book in the Flegon collection. OCLC locates 5 copies. Alex Flegon founded the Flegnon Press in London becoming the first independent Russian-language publisher in the West -- his rivals including YMCA Press were largely subsidized by various political organizations notably the CIA. Vendor's mark on last leaf; some light rubbing along edges of covers; otherwise a lovely copy.

Alec Flegon 1924-2003 an emigre from Romania became a controversial London-based publisher of samizdat literature and Soviet trade directories during the Cold War. He was the first to publish Bulgakov's "Heart of a Dog" and Solzhenitsyn's "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" and he later published four Russian-language versions of Pasternak's "Dr. Zhivago" including one under a Moscow imprint lest Russian buyers be accused of importing anti-Soviet literature. His remarkable success at repeatedly getting manuscripts out of the Soviet Union led to the widespread view that he must have had contacts in the KGB and he used this reputation to his advantage garnering free publicity for his publications. He was accused of copyright infringement and/or piracy on more than one occasion the most famous example being his feuds with Solzhenitsyn and Svetlana Stalin. Nonetheless his perseverance made him an important figure in the publishing history of Russian literature in the West -- he was the first independent Russian-language publisher in the West and remained so for decades. His rivals were largely subsidized by various political organizations notably the CIA. Uzel paperback

Very Good. xiv - 280 pages 7 maps the contents clean and tight with no inscriptions or marks. With an introduction by Air Vice-Marshall Sir Sefton Brancker Director of Civil Aviation. Publisher's red cloth lightly faded to the spine and dusty to the page block edges. In the VERY RARE dustwrapper priced 6/- net to the spine as called for. The dustwrapper is near VG with several historic repaired splits to the verso and with some edge wear to the top and bottom edges and with a triangular chip to the bottom left-hand corner of the back panel just affecting the blurb. Reviews the evolution of international air routes around Britain India the Far East and Australia. Includes chapters on the Baghdad Air Mail and 'The Third Route' across Europe. "The author chose an attractive title for his book procured an interesting introduction written by Major-General Sir Sefton Brancker Director of Civil Aviation and compiled a suitable prologue of appropriate quotations. This book is well illustrated with excellent maps. Major Salt has shown great industry in compiling valuable data respecting the development of imperial air routes up to May 1930." Rare especially in dustwrapper. The mid-1920s and 1930s are often nostalgically referred to as the 'Golden Age' of British civil aviation. In its sixteen years of operation Britain's Imperial Airways developed and promoted long-haul aviation as a viable means of long-distance travel and formulated and maintained a global aerial network that ushered in a new era of post-war globalisation and mass aeromobility. Though criticised as being the product of an imperial power in decline Ewer 2007 Imperial Airways established both the material and cultural foundations on which post-war civilian aviation would flourish and thus its importance must not be underestimated. "Horst Janssen is a once-in-a-century phenomenon an impressive and celebrated draughtsman very few can match up to. And yet there are still some - as yet scarcely noticed - facets of his work remaining to be discovered. Janssen's oeuvre confronts the observer like an enormous artistic moutain massif of countless drawings woodcuts etchings monotypes watercolours pictorial letters postcards and posters. In all of them he broke the bounds of the 'standard measure'. Everything about him was extraordinary including the number of posters he designed and the number of versions which were printed." - Foreward. A new unread copy stll in shrink wrap. 366446Unbound. Very Good. Green sheet of paper. Approximately 5.75" x 4.5". Age-toning at the edges very good. Boldly Signed by Sammy Davis Jr. on one side and Inscribed by Sal Mineo on the other. The autograph seeker has noted the date of each autograph - on successive days in 1961. Though never on-screen together the two stars actually have an interesting connection: Davis sang the title track for the 1955 film Six Bridges to Cross which featured Mineo's debut performance and it was reportedly while en route to the recording studio to perform the song that Davis was in the auto accident in which he lost an eye entirely changing his life and career. One might argue which is the more desirable autograph: Davis the bigger star Mineo's autograph the scarcer. You decide. unknown
