Oguni machi Kotamagawa å°å›½ç”ºå°çŽ‰å·: 1865-67.<br /> <BR> <BR> This archive describes the manufacture and regulation of yamajio mountain salt in the town of Oguni machi on the Tama River in the mountainous area of Yamagata Prefecture north of Niigata. The onsen springs of the town are rich in minerals and were used to manufacture salt for local and regional inhabitants. Today there are very few producers of mountain salt due to the laborious process but it is highly valued by connoisseurs of salt for its delicate taste.<br /> <BR> <BR> Our archive consists of:<br /> <BR> <BR> 1. Manuscript drawing 243 x 327 mm. showing the process of spraying the water on well-ventilated racks covered with branches of the shiba 柴 tree. This allowed the mineral-rich water to slowly drip into a large deep basin. The gathered water would then be boiled down leaving salt crystals.<br /> <BR> <BR> 2 & 3. The first two notebooks 10 & 5 leaves dated February and August 1865 contain details of production of the salt and names of those involved.<br /> <BR> <BR> 4. This notebook 11 leaves dated February 1865 is entirely devoted to the business of making and selling salt with records of quantities sellers and buyers prices received etc;<br /> <BR> <BR> 5. A document 14 leaves from the local magistrate’s office dated February 1865 gives the names of salt manufacturers.<br /> <BR> <BR> 6. A notebook 5 leaves produced by the local magistrate’s office regarding the sale and distribution of salt to many wholesalers in the city of Yonezawa with their seals dated October 1866. Somewhat stained but very legible.<br /> <BR> <BR> 7. Dated 1867 this notebook 8 leaves describes in great detail the process of saltmaking with descriptions of tools and other equipment techniques etc. unknown

Archive of 163 vernacular photographs including 145 in color and 18 in black-and-white capturing the 1960-1963 National Speed Trials commonly known as Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Housed in 17 yellow envelopes with dates and names of racers written in holograph ink annotation to the rectos. <br/><br/>Offered with the archive is a brand new set of the two-volume Bonneville National Speed Trials references covering 1949-1958 and 1959-1968 respectively. The set is new and still in shrinkwrap.<br/><br/>In the early 1960s wealthy California car owners began to experiment with surplus jet engines to boost the horsepower of their cars creating distinctive bootlegged hotrods referred to as jet cars or jets designed specifically for the compacted salt surface of the flats. <br/><br/>The photographs in the archive document many early iterations of these unusual and profoundly dangerous vehicles with a particular focus on racers from southern California including Art Arfons' 8000-horsepower Cyclops which set a record for an open-cockpit vehicle 342 mph which still stands today and Mickey Thompson's Challenger I the first car to record a top speed of 400 mph. Also notable are several photographs of the streamliner entries of the Summers brothers in 1961 1962 and 1963 whose streamliner Goldenrod would go on to hold the land speed record from 1965 to 1991. <br/><br/>As a whole the photographs are bright and well-executed clearly shot with a racing insider's eye for detail. Photographs from the perspective of Speed Week attendees are scarce owing to the relatively remote locale and complete absence of accommodations for spectators making the images in the archive an uncommon intimate record of several pivotal years in the history of hotrod racing.<br/><br/>Photographs 5.75 x 3.5 inches envelopes 7.5 x 4. Both letter and list in very good condition neatly placed in windowpane mounts on the two leaves of a bifolium. Salt is 'just finishing the List of Manuscript Erdeswick's' and will bring it to Nichols when he returns to London. He wonders whether Nichols has 'nearly come to the end of the Book in your reprint I do not think you will make your first sheet answer satisfactorily - without printing the whole or part of it over again - but of course you will be the best judge of that'. He makes a couple of comments on it before stating that he is enclosing 'a List of 12 of John Buckler's engravings which I am in want of to complete a Set of his works which he has very liberally supplied me with. . The usual Printshops have been ransacked without success.' He asks if Nichols has any 'contained in the within List that you could spare - I have been told you bought a Volume of Buckler's works some time since'. 366446Unbound. Very Good. Green sheet of paper. Approximately 5.75" x 4.5". Age-toning at the edges very good. Boldly Signed by Sammy Davis Jr. on one side and Inscribed by Sal Mineo on the other. The autograph seeker has noted the date of each autograph - on successive days in 1961. Though never on-screen together the two stars actually have an interesting connection: Davis sang the title track for the 1955 film Six Bridges to Cross which featured Mineo's debut performance and it was reportedly while en route to the recording studio to perform the song that Davis was in the auto accident in which he lost an eye entirely changing his life and career. One might argue which is the more desirable autograph: Davis the bigger star Mineo's autograph the scarcer. You decide. unknown
