Single leaf wrapper folded; two typescript leaves; one handbill. 4to. The Greenwich Village Theatre playhouse opened on November 15 1917 on Sheridan Square at Christopher Street where W. 4th Street and 7th Avenue meet and was designed by Herman Lee Meader in a Dutch Colonial style. Actor Frank Conroy was integral in its development and ran the theatre. As early cinema became popular in 1921 The Greenwich started showing films between play engagements. The theatre caused controversy with some residents of Greenwich Village who took offense at the Bohemian lifestyles the space cultivated and promoted and many complaints were lobbied against it over incidents such as a "lewd poster" for an Audrey Munson film Heedless Moths.

In May 1926 the theater management announced that it had merged with the Actors' Theatre. The name Actors' Theatre was retained and while its permanent home had not been decided upon the announcement made one thing clear: "It will not be the Greenwich Village."

In January 1928 N. Brewster Morse signed a five-year lease with owner Marguerite A. Barker. Marguerite Abbott Barker b.1893 - d.1930 was a woman of wealth through her father who was president of Eastman Kodak. She was very active in the Greenwich Village theatre scene and hoped to provide a more experimental approach to the theatre experience that included "musical dramatic and motion picture features with a change of program every two weeks." In the lounge area art exhibitions were to be held "where tea coffee and cigarettes will be served during the intermissions." Among the first films screened was Paul Fejos's The Last Moment described by one critic as an "impressionistic picture." She intended to show "unusual films at popular prices" beginning on April 9 1928.

Fashion was the first play produced by a woman playwright Anna Cora Mowatt in 1845 and revived by the Provincetown Players the original Players included George Cram Cook Susan Glaspell Eugene O'Neill John Reed Louise Bryant Floyd Dell Ida Rauh Edna St. Vincent Millay and Djuna Barnes who maintained residence The Provincetown Playhouse at 133 MacDougal Street. This production for The Greenwich Village Theatre ran from April to July 1924 and in the program here states Eugene O'Neill among it's directors.

On February 4 1930 The New York Times announced "Demolition of the Greenwich Village Theatre on the northwest corner of Christopher and Fourth Streets.will begin early in March." The article explained that developers George and Edward Blum had filed plans for a 19-story apartment building the tallest in Greenwich Village. The demolished theater was replaced with the two-story Art Deco style Stewarts Cafeteria building that survives significantly altered at street level. unknown

The text & decorations are printed in black & red. Very good.

Cleverly titled as explained in the introductory text "Mr. Janus and Ourselves" "Surprising as it may seem we occasionally find people who do not know that we have an entrance to their store from State Street. Remember however that it is just as easy to enter by our Chapel Street door should you come from that direction."

The oldest business in New Haven and reputedly one of the oldest hardware stores in the U.S. The John E. Bassett & Co. store added an extra building connected to the store in 1881 which had an entrance on State Street. In his introductory text Bassett writes that The John E. Bassett & Co. has an entrance on State Street "and.we've run around the corner for over fifteen years." This would suggest the date of this brochure to be circa 1896.

This clever advertising booklet subtly promotes the stores merchandise through well-written essays such as "Skating at Lake Whitney" thus advertising their skates and so on.
New Haven: [Printed by the Press of Curtiss & Bradley for John E. 193474493Denver: The Liberal Church INC. 1934. Typed letter from the Bishop of the Liberal Church Inc. Diocese of San Francisco conferring a Doctorate of Divinity title to Dr. THomas J. Hampton of Bush Street in San Francisco. It is typed on the outlandish letterhead of the church and bears an embossed seal of same. Excellent condition. The Liberal Church was an independent church founded in Denver Colorado on 23 February 1923 by Frank Hamilton Rice. He was born in 1881 in Danville Illinois and originally was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1915 he and his family moved to Denver from Oklahoma where he was employed by the Colorado Manufacturer and Consumer as its editor. He served the Grant Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church as a Sunday School teacher and lay minister. In 1922 he advocated that the church sponsor weekly dances for young people as a means of combatting the influence of the public dance halls. After a vigorous debate his idea was soundly defeated and he left the MEC. He was left with a distaste of organised churches and thought he would start his own scaled down more liberal oriented denomination.Rice's views on the nature of the church and society were in line with those of the retired Anglican bishop of Arkansas the Rt. Rev'd William Montgomery Brown 1855 to 1937. The two men began a correspondence which resulted in Brown consecrating Rice on Sunday 30 March 1924 in Denver. The following day on 31 March 1924 the Liberal Church of America Inc. was incorporated. Rice seemed to be most concerned about the welfare of the skid row residents. He opened a "Free Flop House" in Denver to help them out. Other dioceses soon followed in this care for the un-sober and downtrodden. From the letter we can see that the San Francisco "Free Flop House" was located at at 1750 Market Street.Bishop Rice died on 26 February 1945 at the age of 64. His successor as head of the Liberal Church was the Rt. Rev'd Albert Nawyn who presided over Bishop Rice's funeral. The funeral was one of the most impressive funerals Denver ever saw. "Among those present were Larimer Street down-and-outers justices of the Supreme Court cripples in wheel chairs heads of corporations blind men led by children professors of universities police officers state legislators children lawyers and representatives from every segment of Denver life. Notable admirers of Rice were Gene Fowler and Babe Ruth. By 1957 the church seems to have only existed on paper. The Liberal Church, INC. unknown
