Interesting to note admidst all the present-day discussions of diversity in the film industry that to date Poitier and Morgan Freeman are the only two African-Americans to have received the AFI Life Achievement Award out of 44 that have been presented. . It's interesting to note that the tribute book's editor also the co-author of the tribute itself was Joseph McBride who some years later published a highly critical biography of Capra. NOTE that this would appear to be the "public" version of the program with Capra pictured on the front cover that was produced for sale and/or distribution to AFI members; the program distributed at the dinner itself following the pattern of earlier years had a silver-on-silver cover featuring only the AFI logo. Nonetheless along with most of these programs prior to 1986 -- the first time a specifically-labeled "AFI Souvenir Edition" was produced in large quantities -- this one is fairly scarce. . At that time he had been retired from the screen for 13 years but was subsequently lured back for two appearances notably in Milos Forman's RAGTIME 1981 and much less notably in the dreadful 1984 TV-movie TERRIBLE JOE MORAN. . 196873791Pasadena California: California Institute of Technology 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Emil Herzog's set with his ink signature to the front flyleaf in the first volume. A pioneering work based on extensive research conducted at Caltech and Palomar Observatory. While the delineation of the clusters on the 48-inch Palomar Schmidt plates was Zwicky's work all the measurements of the tens of thousands of individual galaxies were Herzog's: photographing each field with the 18-inch Palomar Schmidt measuring coordinates and preparing finding charts. In addition he determined the apparent magnitudes of the brighter galaxies by schraffier guided plates and a flyspanker. For the fainter objects where the schraffier images were too washed out to be manageable he found that his nearsightedness made schraffier images unnecessary. His familiarity with the 48-inch Schmidt plates led him to be one of the first to be aware of the character of the large-scale distribution of galaxies. Later the Swiss-born Herzog 1917-98 taught astronomy at the University of Southern California and mathematics at Cal Poly Pomona serving as department chair from 1974 to 1980. Quarto six volumes. Original blue buckram bindings with gilt titles. Mild fading to the spines with a small spot to the front board of the first volume; otherwise a very good set. Hardcover. sharp-looking copy only faint shelfwear to bottom edge vintage bookseller's label The Seven Arts Carmel on rear pastedown; jacket a bit scuffed but still quite attractive. A Hungarian nationalist novel about a "breathless and bewildered man whose life spanned two irreconcilable worlds" -- before and after World War I. Zilahy 1891-1974 a law student before the war was severely wounded while serving in the Austro-Hungarian army and took up poetry and playwriting during his convalescence. He subsequently found work as a journalist but his most notable success came as a playwright; he cranked out a dozen or so plays during the 1920s one of which won the Hungarian equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. At the time this book appeared one of his plays "The General" had already been filmed in Hollywood under the much more marketable title THE VIRTUOUS SIN. "The Deserter" his third novel was the second to be published in America; he remained in Budapest through World War II at one point establishing a film studio for which he wrote and directed several films but went into exile in the U.S. in 1947 as a result of having fallen out of favor with the post-war Communist government. .
