In a very good internal condition, preserved entirely in the original state, untrimmed and with ample margins. ~ First edition. Extremely rare. WorldCat lists holdings of the second edition (1874) only. Also Jordan (0455) is unable to collate this edition or to compare it with the second (0456). One may assume that the total number of pages in both editions is equal, i.e. 182, with the addition of the appendices at the end. In this view, it is possible that the last two appendices, an extract from another work of Brialmont and an extract from Tripier's work on the defense of Paris, are missing here. This part comprises of pages 213-220 which are provided here in facsimile from scans of the second edition. Also the smaller plate of the two, Pl. I, is lacking and provided in colour facsimile.
