With the usual production errors: plate 4 (Swammerdam) is numbered 15; plate 17 (Bertrand) is numbered 13. Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth (1810-1895), generally recognised as the father of American beekeeping and inventor of the Langstroth Hive. First published in 1853, his seminal work 'The Hive and Honey-Bee' quickly ran to several editions before ill-health in 1885 compelled the author to pass revision of the work to Chas Dadant, whose revised and enlarged edition was first issued in 1888. ALL EARLY PRINTINGS ARE EXTREMELY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY WHEN COMPLETE AND IN THIS CONDITION.
