He served as a court preacher and professor in Königsberg before returning to his hometown of Bad Hersfeld in Hesse Germany in 1705. In Bad Hersfeld he held positions as a church inspector and later as the rector of the local Gymnasium. Mel was known for his pedagogical views influenced by August Hermann Francke.
