'Wyvern' wrote about gastronomy for for the Madras Athenaeum and Daily News during his time in Madras as a Colonel in the India Army. With social changes stirring in India the Colonel's directives furnished to local staff to create the Victorian haute cuisine desired by the Anglo-Indian elite illustrate the transformations occurring throughout the British empire. Chapters cover every aspect of the kitchen the storeroom model menus and of course curries. This edition the sixth contains all preceding prefaces illustrating the changes in taste and style during the mid to later 1800's in Anglo-Indian culture. Hinges cracked but holding. 18861742York England 1886. Loose_leaf. Folded folio. Very good. 32 x 20 cm. This menuwritten by Halliwell a local master of ceremonies and freemason was made to accommodate and service the 3rd and 4th battalions' officers of the West Riding Regiment formerly known as the Duke of Wellington's Regiment. The officers were lodged in the De Grey Rooms neo-classically designed and constructed by architect George Townsend Andrews in the 1840's. The building was originally built to house the Yorkshire Hussar Regiment. The menu describes breakfast luncheon and dinner with served dishes that include tea coffee bacon and eggs kidneys cakes salad soups sweets ices and more. Menu also informs the officers of prices to pay per diem for services and the charges the guests and live-in servants must pay for board and food. The second page lists the sums for individual drinks. Delightful acquisition for a connoisseur of English military history. Light fold marks with some toning. <br/><br/> unknown books

Handwritten notebook with 16 additional daily accounts using "Lake Austin Woolen Mill" letterhead for this cheese factories daily tally. Ledger describes what seems to be a cheese co-op with dividends divided per day report of the season most milk received in one day June 16th - 9195 gallons days cheese was made per year 207 etc. Wells VT rests on the edge of Rutland county and in 1870 the populations total was 430 people. In the early 1800's a dam was built on Lake St. Catherine which enabled industry such as a woolen mill wood working shop and cheese factory to thrive. Article on cooking extracted from Volume 42 of Johann Georg Krunitz's Oeconomische Encyklopaedie. The plates depict distilling equipment large-scale stoves double-boilers pots and pans pressing equipment and others. The first 73 volumes of this massive work originally appeared in Berlin 1793-1798. Krunitz was born in Berlin and studied at Gottingen Halle and Frankfurt where he took his doctorate in medicine in 1749 and initially practiced. La Cuisinier: Covering all aspects of cooking of post revolutionary France. Includes engraved frontispiece titled "intérieur d'une cuisine bien ordonnée" and 3 plates depicting ovens and cooking utensils. Albert was former chef de cuisine for Cardinal Fesch Napoléon's Uncle. L'art de Conserver: Appert's signature on verso of title page. One folding plate. Appert a confectioner chef and distiller developed the first method of preserving food by enclosing it in airtight sealed containers. Pasteur later admitted his pasteurization process was largely derived from Appert's earlier methods. Three plates: Frontispiece confectioner's laboratory and 2 plates illustrating kitchen utensils and motifs/decorations. The author the widow of a renowned pastry chef opened her shop in Berlin at the end of the 18th century and was able to establish herself as a refined pastry chef later moving her establishment to Paris. The book contains recipes and advice on how to make jams marmalades and various preserves. Instructions on distillation and the composition of liqueurs and creams. Also includes how to prepare chocolate coffee tea syrups lemonade punch ice cream and sorbets. With marbled boards end papers and edges this French recipe book has some rubbing and wear to the edges with a 1 cm. loss to the tail of the spine. Dinner featured Chowder Baked Mackerel with Tomato Sauce Fried Eels - Jewish style Saratoga Chips Clam Fritters Soft Shell Crabs Quahogs Indian Pudding Ice Cream Watermelon & Peaches and Ponham Spring Water. Also noted the 1891 Executive Committee and the Providence Warren & Bristol Train schedules. <br /> <br />A private club with a membership of 200 shareholders opened in 1867 as a place for gentlemen to network over shore dinners of lobster steamed clams corn and potatoes. The club grounds included a ball field miniature clock and obstacle golf courses bowling alleys and it's own wharf. This area in Providence known as "Riverside" hosted the Crescent Park Amusement Park known as the "Coney Island of the East". Along the Providence River west of the club is the Ponham Lighthouse which is still standing today. The club closed in 1954 and the property was redeveloped for condominiums in the 1980's. 18486102Boston: Dickinson Printing Establishment Damrell & Moore 1848. Octavo 22.5 x 14 cm. 60 pages 1 folded leaf of plates; illustrated. With one folding copper-engraved plate and 12 text figures. Interleaved with blanks throughout. FIRST EDITION. Record of a patent infringement case between two neighboring stove foundries in Troy New York. The plaintiffs Elias Johnson and David B. Cox who owned the Clinton Foundry later owned by Fuller & Warren sued their neighbors Peter Low and George W. Hicks. The attorney for the plaintiffs William Whiting explains that the defendants "flooded the market with a stove so nearly resembling the patented stove both in name form size ornaments and construction as to deceive any person of ordinary discrimination." They even named the stove the "American Hot Air" while the Johnson and Cox stove was the "American Air Tight. "The Defendants desiring not only to take away the fruits of Pierce's invention but of his taste also actually directed their pattern makers to imitate Pierce's stove in every particular even to the ornamental carving of the pattern and the shape and position of the legs on the stove so that it would be easy to pass off their stove for Pierce's" page 12. Low and Hicks saw the strength of the suit and settled. Contemporary calf over marbled boards with black morocco cover label with the name "William Whiting" stamped in gold.
