198912906Santa Rosa CA: Graphic Concepts 1989. Broadsheet cartoon map 22.25 x 16.75 inches with printed information on verso intended as a brochure but in this case unfolded. Some dampstaining along bottom portion mostly visible on verso with old tape at each corner of verso from previous mounting likely removed from a wall or bulletin board long ago. Otherwise minor wear. Good plus. Rolled. A lovely illustrated map of Napa Valley highlighting one of the region's most distinctive and iconic characteristics -- its robust viticulture industry. Numerous vineyards and wineries dot the fertile valley epitomized by an idyllic scene in the upper right corner. Notable names include Robert Mondavi Charles Krug Beringer Stag's Leap Sutter Home and Charles Shaw the source of Trader Joe's "Two Buck Chuck". The design and layout were executed by Ron Morales with artwork by Susan Clifford. This is one of several similar wine maps created by Morales though the emphasis on Napa Valley is an uncommon characteristic. The notice in the bottom margin reads "Copyright 1989 by Graphic Concepts" of Santa Rosa California. Charts on the verso lists the wineries by county and their various amenities and operating hours as well as local accommodations entertainment restaurants and so forth. This work was intended to be folded as a brochure for easy transport but the current example was never folded; it was likely posted at a winery or local business in Napa Valley and taken off the wall at some point. OCLC records just two copies of this delightful map fit for the wall of any wine enthusiast at the Library of Congress and the University of Utah though it is difficult to believe copies don't reside at various California especially northern California institutions. 19381721Los Angeles 1938. Very good. 18pp. Narrow 12mo. Original gilt wrappers stapled. Light wear. Promotional brochure for the Regina Winery in Etiwanda California operated by the Ellena Brothers. Established in 1906 by Claudio Ellena a descendant of an Italian winemaking family. Claudio's sons eventually took over the business marketing their wine under the brand Regina Queen of Wines. The vineyard primarily produced sparkling and dessert wines and also operated a vinegar plant. The brochure gives a history of the family and vineyards and strives to "acquaint you more fully with the many ways to really enjoy the goodness of fine wines without the burden of responsibility of minute details or formality." It also includes recipes for several champagne cocktails. unknown

In this reasoning I had the will to satisfy not only the curiosity of some amateur of the grateful and generous Wines of Cyprus giving the rules to list them but also to be able to improve the Cultivation the Manufacture and the Conservation of our Tuscan Wines and particularly to improve the quality of the wines produced there using the support from the genius of our Farmers"</p><p>More in details he starts addressing the issue of the poor resistance of Tuscan wines to navigation deepening the observations already published in the first volume of his "Travels in Cyprus". Mariti studying grapes and winemaking processes in use in Cyprus gives an account of the island's wines distinguishing them by types based on the quality of the grapes the length of the aging process and their conservation and also giving data and figures relating to the sale of the product both in the East and in the West.</p><p>Mariti dedicated this essay on the wines of Cyprus to Lord Clavering whose arms are engraved at the top of the first leaf of the dedication. The preliminary leaves also include an account of the <em>Accademia dei Georgofili</em> devoted to the study of agriculture which was founded in Florence in 1753 and is still active today.</p><p>Giovanni Filippo Mariti 1736 –1806 he was an Italian antiquarian scientist and historian. Intellectual with multiple interests he became famous in Europe mainly for his travels in the East.</p><p>Mariti became interested since his youth in natural sciences cultivating botany and especially agronomy studies and in 1772 he became a corresponding member of the <em>Accademia dei Georgofili</em> founded in Florence on July 4 1753 by Ubaldo Montelatici under the impulse of that renewal of agriculture that the Habsburgs-Lorraine hoped for and promoted to remedy the problems that arose in their lands starting from the first decade of the second half of the century regarding crops and food supplies.</p><p>Mariti lived for seven years at Larnaca in Cyprus becoming honorary British vice-consul and became increasingly familiar with the wine-making process of the island. A shortened version of this treatise was included in the French translation of his "Travels in the Levant".</p><p>Beside <em>Del Vino di Cipro</em> he is remembered for the treatise titled <em>Della Robbia sua coltivazione suoi usi</em> Florence 1776 dedicated by Mariti to the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo concerning a plant the <em>Robbia</em> Madder cultivated in the East and used for the colouring of clothes which Mariti hoped to introduce in Europe and for <em>Odeporico o sia itinerario per le colline pisane</em> which was published in Florence in two volumes between 1797 and 1799.</p><p>The first volume of this work which remained partly unpublished deals with the agricultural history of the Tuscan hills the second is dedicated to the history of the water bath today Casciana Terme. The two volumes are divided into chapters that take the form of letters written to an imaginary friend.</p><p>George Clavering-Cowper 3rd Earl Cowper 1739 - 1789 was an English nobleman and politician. In 1780 he purchased Villa Palmieri in Fiesole with a splendid view of Florence. Skilled diplomat and politician he decided to obtain prestige by turning a blind eye on the relationship that his wife had established with the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo from which he managed to obtain the title of Prince of Nassau d'Auverquerque.</p><p>The art collection that Count Cowper built during his years in Florence was a great investment of time and money for him. Among the most important works that were part of his collection we mention two paintings by Raphael the first known with the name of <em>Piccola Madonna Cowper</em> and the other as <em>Madonna Niccolini-Cowper</em>.</p><p>Conditions: fine copy untrimmed in its original printer paper board small restoration at spine.</p><p>Provenance: I. 1812AQ30893St. Albans: Shaw Printer 1812. 8pp. Two bilfolia disbound. Priced in manuscript. Together with: Inventory of the Effects of Mr. Charles Williams of St. Albans not included in the printed catalogue of sale. 10th December 1812. Manuscript on paper. Single bifolium An apparently unrecorded auction catalogue annotated by the auctioneer with the prices achieved of the property of a deceased wine merchant including his 'stock in trade' lotted by bin of sherry port rum gin and 'coniac brandy'. The sale realised a total of £268. 4s. 5d. and included 51 lots of his wine stock along with a sequence of empoty casks. The manuscript addendum written on the day after the public auction adds several household as well as '21 Bottles of Currant Wine in 2 Tea Canisters'. Interestingly St. Albans possessed a novel wine licensing system established under the terms of the 1570 wine charter a model not repeated elsewhere. The borough corporation had the power to grant two licences to local vintners in return for an annual endowment of £20 remarkably to be provided to the master of St. Albans grammar school for the maintenance of the institution. We have been unable to trace Charles Williams nor locate any record of his business. However it does not seem unreasonable to assume that he held one of these much sought after licenses; certainly the auction catalogue reveals an extensive stock surely necessitated by the possession of a trade monopoly. . 8vo.
