A handsome interesting and high quality collection of labels from throughout Europe during the World War Two years. Some highlights include a lovely woodcut for a 1943 Toscano Valpolicella A Boubee Freres Bourdeaux and a nice run of Veltliners. Some pencil text to the pages adjacent to many labels in German indicating purchase and drinking notes. In near fine condition. unknown books

An early wine list from the legendary Manhattan restaurant Lutèce 1961-2004. The list opens with an introductory statement to diners from the restaurant's founder André Surmain who thanks the restaurant's seven suppliers a rare credit on modern wine lists and Alexis Lichine the author of The Wines of France. Displaying a fine selection of Bordeaux Rouges & Blancs; Bougognes Rouges; Roses Loire; Alsace Rhône; and Champagnes including Lafite Rothschild dating to the 1890s Haut Brion from the 1930s and pre-depression era Mouton. Throughout each selection lists producer as well location of the vineyard. The three Alsatian wines on the list have been credited as the primary genesis of the Alsatian wine market in the United States. Julia Child Playboy Magazine and Zagat each proclaimed Lutèce the best restaurant in the United States; the New York Times gave the restaurant four stars. Spiral bound in gilt-stamped blue wrappers. Published by the Barone Ricasoli winery notably a continuously run family business since 1141 and still in operation today. Established in 1906 by Claudio Ellena a descendant of an Italian winemaking family. Claudio's sons eventually took over the business marketing their wine under the brand Regina Queen of Wines. The vineyard primarily produced sparkling and dessert wines and also operated a vinegar plant. The present work showcases wine labels as well as a sparkling wine dispenser so you can pour bottles of champagne "on tap." The brochure gives a history of the family and vineyards and strives to "acquaint you more fully with the many ways to really enjoy the goodness of fine wines without the burden of responsibility of minute details or formality." It also includes recipes for several champagne cocktails. books

Fred Harvey 1835 - 1901 owned around 45 restaurants along the railroad and 20 dinning cars. His restaurant legacy lasted until his gradson died in 1965. The Fred Harvey Company was the sixth largest food retailer in the United States when it sold in 1968. Stamped in blue ink on the upper wrapper is the date "Nov 21 1942". On the inside at the head it also states "For Victory Buy United States War Savings Bonds And Stamps". A sign of the times. Included in the list are California and imported wines liquor mixed drinks beer cigars/cigarettes and playing cards. Also is an extensive list of waters and juices. Fred Harvey unknown books

Categorized with 10 pages of "Vins Rouges" 2 pages of "Vins Rouges Demi-Bouteilles 2 pages of "Vins Rouges Magnums 3 pages of "Vins Blancs" 2 pages of "Bourgognes" 1 page "Champagnes" 1 page "Champagnes Demi-bouteilles and ending with 2 pages of "Liqueurs". Le Chapon Fin still exists today as does the incredible wine cellar which they do tours of! We found a little blurb about the restaurants history on the website: "Immediately after the French Revolution part of the central area of Bordeaux was rebuilt. New streets radiated out from a market square. In 1825 Messrs Chantal and Despirou opened a restaurant and wine merchant's shop at 7 Rue Montesquieu next to the Théâtre Français. "Le Chapon Fin" quickly became a popular address. . Chapon Fin was frequented by a succession of kings: Alfonso XIII of Spain one of the restaurant's most faithful customers who had his own wine cellar Manuel II of Portugal the Sultan of Morocco Queen Ranavalona of Madagascar and the Prince of Wales later Edward VII. The Chapon Fin was also a favorite with artists such as Sarah Bernhardt Yvette Guilbert and Toulouse Lautrec and politicians such as Aristide Briand who adored the lamprey in red wine and George Clemenceau." Shaw was a Scottish wine merchant who was almost single-handedly credited with bringing about a reduction in the tax on wine coming into Great Britain and Ireland. Andre Simon called this title "one of the most interesting books we have on the subject." A must have for any serious wine collector.
