Printed by Imprimerie Draeger Frères Montrouge.<br /> <br /> A set of thirty-seven extravagantly produced annual fine wine commercial catalogues issued by the Parisian wine merchant Établissements Nicolas Maison between 1929 to 1973 together with associated tariff cards advertising cards and ephemera and Carte Fines Bouteilles commercial catalogues issued for the years 1993-1997. This set lacks only the extremely rare 1927 and 1928 catalogues. No catalogues were published in 1937 1940-1948 1952 and 1968. In French.<br /> <br /> Continuing the trend established by Nicolas earlier in the 1920s with the publication of Monseigneur Le Vin and the extremely successful 'Nectar' advertising campaign Nicolas' groundbreaking catalogues were illustrated and designed by famous artists and typographers of the twentieth century including Cassandre Darcy Iribe Legrand Fantin-Latour Galanis Diginimont Buffet Chapelain-Midy Lorjou van Dongen and others. The illustrations are reproduced in a range of different techniques including screen printing lithography photo-montage and four color printing. During it's two centuries of trade it has significantly changed the way consumers drink and consider wine. First it was the first merchant to sell table wine in bottles rather than casks making it easier for the average person to drink a glass of wine at home rather than in a tavern. Second and more relevant here Nicolas' association of fine wine with fine contemporary and avant-garde art changed the way wine was marketed and perceived by the public. Nicolas' use of art to promote and communicate the qualities of wine has been much imitated since the 1920s and continues today to be used by premium wines and wineries throughout the world. <br /> <br /> Notwithstanding the contributions of the various celebrated contributing artists much of the unique character of the Nicolas Listes can be attributed to Alfred Latour 1888-1964 a French painter and engraver who worked extensively as a graphic designer for Nicolas and was a friend of Cassandre and many of the other contributing artists. Poet novelist essayist dramatist speaker journalist vigneron doctor and intensely involved in fields as varied as sociology medicine oenology local history literature and theatre Eylaud founded the Doctors Friends of Wine and the International Medical Committee for the Scientific Study of Grapes and Wine to defend wine in the light of medicine. A prolific writer Eylaud published a large number of works many on the wines of Bordeaux during his lifetime. He was also a champion of Montesquieu and the founder and president of the Académie Montesquieu in Bordeaux.<br /> <br /> <br /> Gautier-Constant 1907-1978 engraver and illustrator was also a native of Bordeaux from the Gironde and Professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux. Fine/-</p> <p><br /> FÉRET Édouard 1844-1910<br /> <br /> Bordeaux and its Wines: classed by order of merit 2nd English Edition improved.<br /> <br /> London: Clive Coates MW 1995. Facsimile edition of the 1883 edition published by G Masson Paris and Feret & Fils Bordeaux. Printed by Smith Settle Otley.<br /> <br /> Octavo 195x120mm grey cloth black ruled and decorated gilt lettered boards12 half-title title list of subscribers5-xi16164pp : π¹⸠1-17¹⸠18². Eight colour maps three folding only seven are listed in the table of contents; numerous monochrome woodblock engraved illustrations of the various château and chai by Eugène Vergez. Limited Edition hand numbered No 165 of 500.<br /> <br /> ¶  In 1846 Michel-Édouard Féret a publisher and Charles Cocks an English schoolmaster and wine enthusiast living in Bordeaux decided to publish a directory of wine for the English.  Bordeaux its Wines and the Claret Country was published in London later that year. Féret then convinced Cocks of the value of a French translation Bordeaux et ses Vins which was published in 1850. Cocks died in 1854. Subsequent editions in French overseen by Féret ensued and in 1883 a second English edition was published being a revised and updated translation of the 4th French Edition October 1881. New editions often colloquially described as Cocks & Féret are still published roughly every 10 years or so in French and English.<br /> <br /> The wines of Bordeaux were Clive Coates' first love and what he first wrote on although he later fell harder in love with Burgundy. A keen collector of wine books he had copies of most editions of Cocks & Féret and it is likely this facsimile is of a copy from his personal collection.<br /> <br /> Jean Baptiste Eugène Vergez 1846-1925 was a native of Bordeaux and part of the Bordeaux Landscape School. He illustrated several early editions of Cocks & Féret providing several hundred engravings of the châteaux of Bordeaux.<br /> <br /> An excellent fine facsimile of a scarce reference.<br /> <br /> § OCLC records 1 holding of the original British Library;<br /> § Gabler G16392; Bitting p.93 French edition see note; Simon BV p.95.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> </p> Clive Coates unknown
