Questo interessante capitolo tratto da "The Silverado Squatters" 1883, (opera di Stevenson, memorie di viaggio della sua luna di miele durata due mesi) fornisce alcune interessanti descrizioni della California durante la fine del XIX secolo. Stevenson utilizza il primo telefono della sua vita, lungo la costa della California incontra un certo numero di produttori di vino che cominciavano a sperimentare la viticoltura nella "Napa valley", fra cui anche il più vecchio viticoltore della valle, Jacob Schram, che aveva sperimentato per 18 anni la viticoltura nel suo Schramsberg Winerye.
