Two wine-related ephemera pieces from the mid-20th century. - New York n. d. ca 1955. Small booklet; 6 x 3 1/4; pp. 10 including text to wraps verso; pictorial wraps decorated after a poster by Toulouse Lautrec; illustrated with small in-line drawings; a tiny spot to spine else very minor wear; in about very good condition. A charming booklet on the specifics of French wines and advertisement for the company it was created by Barton and Guestier Wines - established in 1725 in Bordeaux by Thomas Barton and represented in over 130 countries. Topics in the booklet included a list with a few "rules of thumb" as to which wine to serve with various foods at what temperature should wines be served etc. - San Francisco 1953. Small card; 2 1/4 x 3 1/2; four wine cocktails recpies on recto illustrated with small drawings; calendar for 1953 on verso; very light wear; in near fine condition. Petri Wine Company was founded in 1886 by Raffaello Petri in the San Joaquin Valley initially producing their wines only in kegs for bulk local distribution. During the Prohibition the family closed down their wineries and temporarily traded in Italian leathers and cigars later using those profits to expand the wine-making operation by buying competing wineries. In 1935 they began bottling their wines and selling them nationally. In the early 1940s the company was a major sponsor of the popular radio show "The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." In 1953 Petri was the largest domestic producer of wines in the US. Louis Petri grandson of Raffaello was instrumental in founding Allied Grape Growers - an organization whose main goal was stabilizing grape prices. Folio: 2. 10-5/8" x 6-3/4" <br/><br/>Gabler though not listing this item does briefly discuss & list divers tracts & pamphlets written in the early 1640s voicing public outrage over a contract between Charles I and the Vintner's Company of London- under said contract the Vintners agreed to pay a 46 shilling tax on every ton of Spanish & French wine & also agreed to annually buy a certain amount from English importers. In return the vintners were permitted to sell cooked victuals a proviso not in their original charter & allowed to recoup the tax by charging a penny a quart more that the officially published price. The ultimate effect was to give the Vintners' Company a monopoly on the wine trade all the while enriching the coffers of Charles I. Needless to say wine drinkers were livid. Parliament eventually responded in the consumers' favor. Gabler pp. 2-3. Contemporary to Louis Pasteur Jules Salleron established a Parisian company specializing in oenological precision instrumentation developing an acetimeter followed by his renown ebulliometer still used today. Joined in the 1880s by Jules Dujardin the company grew and continues to operate today. This pictorial broadside illustrates their oenological analysis laboratory and promotes their business to a Spanish-speaking clientele. On heavy cream stock printed in red and blue. Original metal mounting bars affixed to top and bottom edges. Small bend and slight creasing on lower edge with 3.5 cm tear along lower mount and 2 cm to the upper mount; some light wear and soiling otherwise very good condition. The lots were sold at the direction of the executors of Judge Hilton's estate and overseen by Du Vivier & Co. Hilton is best remembered for his profitable association with Alexander Stewart and for his 1500 acre estate in Saratoga Springs known at its height as Woodlawn Park. Not recorded in OCLC.
