ABOUT THIS BOOK: The crux of this absorbing and timely memoir of Cold War espionage is the swap of KGB agent Rudolph Abel for American pilot Frank Powers back to their superpower homes in 1962. Abel had been caught spying in New York in the late 1950s; Powers shot down on a reconnaissance mission over Sverdlovsk in 1960. Yet astonishingly in 1983 it transpired that the man tried and convicted as Rudolph Abel was in fact .Willie Fisher from Newcastle! The narrative traces Willie's story from Newcastle to Moscow to New York tracing the birth of his father Heinrich to German parents in Russia. Despite marriage and a daughter and life in the northeast of England Willie was dedicated to his Communist Party work and an expertise with radio operation and his facility for languages. When Willie's spying activities were exposed in New York cautious to the end he claimed to be Rudolph Abel the name of an old comrade and the Soviet authorities colluded in his deceit. This singular account of the changing face of communism and the evolution of a century in politics is also the story of a virtual dynasty of spies seen at work and at home - like father like son. First and only editions. Printed by Imprimerie Draeger Frères Montrouge.

A set of thirty-seven extravagantly produced annual fine wine commercial catalogues issued by the Parisian wine merchant Établissements Nicolas Maison between 1929 to 1973 together with associated tariff cards advertising cards and ephemera and Carte Fines Bouteilles commercial catalogues issued for the years 1993-1997. This set lacks only the extremely rare 1927 and 1928 catalogues. No catalogues were published in 1937 1940-1948 1952 and 1968. In French.

Continuing the trend established by Nicolas earlier in the 1920s with the publication of Monseigneur Le Vin and the extremely successful 'Nectar' advertising campaign Nicolas' groundbreaking catalogues were illustrated and designed by famous artists and typographers of the twentieth century including Cassandre Darcy Iribe Legrand Fantin-Latour Galanis Diginimont Buffet Chapelain-Midy Lorjou van Dongen and others. The illustrations are reproduced in a range of different techniques including screen printing lithography photo-montage and four color printing. Each catalogue or Liste is a design statement and a work of art in itself; not to mention a record of the extraordinary wines on offer and their price and availability over time.

Liste 1929: 240x165mm black and gold illustrated stiff card wrappers stab sewn 2231pp; illustration by Jules Isnard Dransy 1883-1945; two advertising cards for the fine wines of Bordeaux laid in. During it's two centuries of trade it has significantly changed the way consumers drink and consider wine. First it was the first merchant to sell table wine in bottles rather than casks making it easier for the average person to drink a glass of wine at home rather than in a tavern. Second and more relevant here Nicolas' association of fine wine with fine contemporary and avant-garde art changed the way wine was marketed and perceived by the public. Nicolas' use of art to promote and communicate the qualities of wine has been much imitated since the 1920s and continues today to be used by premium wines and wineries throughout the world.

Notwithstanding the contributions of the various celebrated contributing artists much of the unique character of the Nicolas Listes can be attributed to Alfred Latour 1888-1964 a French painter and engraver who worked extensively as a graphic designer for Nicolas and was a friend of Cassandre and many of the other contributing artists. After his death in 1966 his son Jean took over his position at the Établissements Nicolas Maison.

A scarce collection of some of the most innovative and elegant wine marketing materials and ephemera ever produced.

§ OCLC suggests there are no holdings of a complete or partial run in institutions and that holdings of individual titles are scarce; a complete run of digital copies appears to be held by the Bibliothèques Patrimoniale/Forney Paris.
§ Oberlé Fritsch 597; Bibliothèque Forney

Établissements Nicolas Maison Fondée en 1822 unknown

An early wine list from the legendary Manhattan restaurant Lutèce 1961-2004. The list opens with an introductory statement to diners from the restaurant’s founder André Surmain who thanks the restaurant’s seven suppliers a rare credit on modern wine lists and Alexis Lichine the author of The Wines of France. Displaying a fine selection of Bordeaux Rouges & Blancs; Bougognes Rouges; Roses Loire; Alsace Rhône; and Champagnes including Lafite Rothschild dating to the 1890s Haut Brion from the 1930s and pre-depression era Mouton. Throughout each selection lists producer as well location of the vineyard. The three Alsatian wines on the list have been credited as the primary genesis of the Alsatian wine market in the United States. Julia Child Playboy Magazine and Zagat each proclaimed Lutèce the best restaurant in the United States; the New York Times gave the restaurant four stars. Spiral bound in gilt-stamped blue wrappers. Wine sections are thumb-indexed. The list was never used and thus the wines remain unpriced. Very near fine. Signed by head chef André Soltner “En Souvenirâ€. unknown

179265431792. 59 leaves enumerating the names of grapes cereal crops and oils and their prices for nearly two centuries. Small folio 273 x 178 mm. 18th-cent. vellum over boards tail of spine defective two of four ties lacking. Burgundy: 1622-1792.

A fascinating and rare survival which details the precipitous rise in the prices of Burgundian wine and the emergence of a hierarchy among regions and vintages over a 170-year period. This document consisting of three gatherings 28; 28; 3 leaves bound together and written in several legible hands provides a wealth of information on grain harvests in the region which varied greatly from year to year and indicates years with disastrous harvests. The present manuscript constitutes a unique history of agriculture in Burgundy especially pertaining to the evolving market for Côte de Nuits wine.

“Burgundy had no experience like the boomtime of 18th-century Bordeaux. No new wines were invented no new districts planted. The Bordeaux picture is all expansion and creation; the Burgundy one of evolving tastes and techniques of new market forces and overall of slowly progressing definition: a more precise notion of the character style and value of the wine from each corner of the Côte…In the Côte de Nuits the notion of the ‘cru’ was further advanced…The vineyards were generally less overcrowded and by now planted with cuttings rather than layers; hence more deep-rooting. Increasingly in the 18th century owners of the most prestigious crus selected their best grapes to make separate cuvées the best vat being called the ‘tête de cuvée’.â€â€“Hugh Johnson Vintage 1989 pp. 267 & 272.

The motivation for compiling this record-book may have come from the introduction of a law in 1622 that outlawed the sale of Lyonnais and Beaujolais wines as Burgundian. The records of the first three decades consist mostly of grains and oil from the region but in the early 1670s wines begin to predominate and the lists for each year become increasingly long. It is very likely that at this point landowners would have shifted to using any arable land for vastly more lucrative grapes. By the 1690s dozens of grape varietals are noted from communes such as Auvilliers Les Cailles Chambolle Chorey Comblanchien Corgoloin Côte de Beaune Gilly Magny Saint Georges Saint Julien Les Cailles Vaucrains Pouilly Prissey etc. Prices for wine rose enormously from the 1690s and experienced peaks in 1701 1733 and 1770. Wines are increasingly categorized by the mid-18th century according to vineyard and in some cases cru.

The name “de Bays†appears several times in the manuscript and the signature of “de Bays†is found at the end of the year 1771.

Very few comparable documents survive and the present manuscript provides a vast amount of data on the prices for wine grapes and grains in the 17th and 18th centuries.
