It has two seperate narrative threads the first standard form fiction following a detective and the second a series of letters between "Mo Yan" and an aspiring author who is a fan of his work. Over the course of the book the narrative threads cross over and merge.<br /> <br /> Originally suppressed in China as subversive it was first printed in Taiwan in 1992 under the title "Jiu Guo". Mo Yan meaning "Don't speak" is a Chinese novelist and short story writer. The firm was established in 1908 from the merger of two family firms of wine merchants established in the early part of the nineteenth century. For many years they had outposts in Gibraltar East Africa and elsewhere in the British Empire. Written on commission the booklet discusses the role of wine in cooking and how to flamber marinate and chose wines before giving nine elegantly written recipes for French dishes using wine and a liqueur. With the permission of Saccone & Speed the content was incorporated into the first edition of David's French Country Cooking published by John Lehmann in 1951.<br /> <br /> One of the most scarce of David's publications.
