Duodecimo 195x130mm original publisher's black pebbled cloth gilt lettered spine plain blind ruled and stamped decoration to boards 2xii11-2044 blankpp : 1Â¹Â² 2-8Â¹Â² 9â¸.Â Thirty-two wood block engraved monochrome illustrations.Â Corners lightly rubbed; slight fraying to tail of spine; light stains to the frontispiece and title page not affecting the text or illustration; crease to rear paste-down. Â¶Â Â There are fifteen chapters: introductory remarks; glass houses and conveniences; artificial heat and apparatus; borders or prepared beds; planting and management the first year; management for the second year and permanent treatment for the cold grapery; the early grapery or forcing house; pot culture; retarding house; list of varieties; pruning and training; propagation and the raising of new kinds; diseases; insects and how to destroy them; the vineyards and out-door culture. The American Grape Grower's Guide was a very popular treatise on the cultivation of grapes for table consumption both under glass and outdoors. Â It was based on Chorlton's experience as gardener and horticulturist to J C Green Esq of Staten Island. Â In that role Chorlton was also a several time prize winner at the New York Horticultural Exhibition for hothouse grapes. An early edition of a popular and practical work.
