After resigning he became an engineer and paymaster in the Army and went on to serve as aide-de-camp for Zachary Taylor in the Mexican War where his actions the Battle of Buena Vista in 1847 precipitated his promotion to Lt. Colonel. Taylor chose Coffee to report to President James K. Polk about the battle. Afterwards he was an Army surveyor in California. A pleasing copy with an interesting association.
