Original dark maroon blind- and gilt-stamped morocco all edges gilt cream endleaves; joints rubbed. Early small oxidized silvery-looking bookplate/label of I.M. Galton Eton. Very good. With two fore-edge paintings by Don Noble: Westminster Hall & Hampton Court. Very finely painted – this book seems like it was a book that Noble liked to paint on as his detail is sharper on this set. The paintings are not signed but Noble's style and choice of colors is clearly recognizable. In addition there is a short penciled note 2 markings in his hand: / HANDWRITING OF DON NOBLE: Not clearly written: ffu or perhaps DHo or if one's imagination is working DNo is stylistically possible representing a moniker or artist's signature. Whatever he wrote it is his handwriting / 2 vB i.e. 2 vols. But looks like a "B". / William Roscoe was "a champion of freedom for all a poet writer scholar patron of the Arts lawyer banker bibliophile and botanist." – John Moores University Liverpool. / Sold by Harrington's with their cost-marks end-paper annotations. Probably commissioned by or represented by that firm just after it was painted. Don Noble either sold the set to Harrington's or they commissioned him to paint on this set which is what I would guess is correct. The period of execution being approximately 1980s-1990s. By evidence of Harrington's the father not the 2 sons buying pattern at auction I note that the firm purchased auctioned lots of leather-bound books and commissioned or assigned various books for making a new fore-edge painting. Octavo ix 3 306pp. Full maroon morocco gilt designs stamped on covers. Title in gilt on spine with gilt-embellished compartments. All edges gilt with gilt turn-ins. No additional printings listed. Solid text block rubbed corners and edges. Previous ownership inscriptions to front endpapers. Fore-edge painting depicts a mountain landscape with a small sound in the foreground. There are cattle along the shore and a few people in the water. There is a small man on horseback on the right side of the painting. A vibrant detailed example. Edward Moxon unknown

The scene is framed within an ochre border a bluish-green wallpaper panel on either side itself framed in ochre a bureau partly displayed on the left a circular window or mirror on the left. Alfred Trapnell bookplate. Very good. With a vertical fore-edge painting of a large urn or vase with a plant. The painting is not signed or dated. The view is suggestive of three urns that decorate the text of this volume but it is not a copy of them. Alfred Trapnell bookplate his library sold in NY ca. 1910 "997" label. Was the fore-edge painted before Trapnell bought the book or after Alfred Trapnell was a famous collector of porcelains. From the Phoebe Easton collection of fore-edge paintings. Printed for T. Among the English selections are contributions by Samuel Rogers Gray Burns Shakespeare Tennyson Gammer Gurton unknown Sheridan Byron Andrew Marvel Ben Jonson Cowper Milton Congreve Prior Colton etc. "In 1838 Drury became classical lecturer at Caius but having been ordained he left Cambridge in 1839 to take sole charge of Alderley Gloucestershire a curacy which he exchanged the following year for that of Bromham Wiltshire. Drury together with some friends projected and published the Arundines Cami a collection of translations into Latin and Greek verse by several Cambridge men. The first edition was published in a beautiful form in 1841 and four subsequent editions appeared during Drury's lifetime; a sixth after his death was edited by his son-in-law Mr. H. J.
