A very charming early painted work with lovely Chinese text adjacent to each painting. This work covers 11 old sages and the text is a tribute to each. Covers Buo Liu Ji an official Wang Yi Zhi a Taoist notable Yen Wen Zhong scholar & eight others. Nicely painted with a delicate hand finely executed and very clearly written characters each with two nice cinnabar seals in both lower corners. Those celebrated are drawn in full period costume some are seated in elaborate chairs most sport very long beards. A wonderful example of a Chinese painted album strictly for Chinese without a thought for the "foreign market." Refreshingly superb work showing the literati. . unknown

Overall very good. On the first leaf of a bifolium the second leaf being blank apart from the end of the signature ‘Jas Sant’ which has extended across from the bottom right corner of the reverse of the first leaf. In good condition lightly aged with the reverse of the second leaf laid down on a rectangle of grey paper cut from a leaf of an album. Addressed to ‘G. Lance Esqr.’ The letter begins: ‘My Dear Sir / My best thanks for your note. Depend upon it I will look to myself and in doing so look to yr. criticisms and I hope benefit by them.’ He reports that he has been ‘going hard at the Portrait to day and it is a difficult thing already. I shall have a difficulty with the dress for her Grace his patron Frances Countess Waldegrave seems to think with horror of my particular style of costume being introduced so I am making point lace do wonders. last two words underlined’. In conclusion he urges him to ‘Come when you can and cut me to ribbons and so oblige / Yours sincerely / Jas Sant’. 7 March 1856; [?]. unknown

Signed by Medal of Honor recipients James Allen Taylor and James Elms Swett on their pages and photographer's signature and inscription to the front free-endpaper "To: Joe Discover the Wonderfulness of Ordinary. Thanks for all your help. God Bless! Best Regards Casalini." A near fine copy - clean and solid with straight edges and corners. Other than the inscriptions the word "Buzz" to the top of the free-endpaper is the only marking. Unclipped dustjacket is very good with some soiling to the white panels indentions near the rear joint and a bit of ruffling to the panel edges. 160 pp. a beautiful collection of full page black and white photos of recipients of the Medal of Honor. This copy does not have the word "Congressional" in the title perhaps indicating an early edition although no statement of edition is present. <br/><br/> Sweet Pea Press hardcover
