19335493171933. Unbound. Fine. Broadside. Yellow quarto sheet printed recto only. Folded twice and with a very tiny stain else fine. A statement prepared by Salvador Dali before his arrival in New York in anticipation of his first solo exhibition at the Lucien Levy Gallery from November 21 to December 8 1933. The statement quotes fellow surrealist and later antagonist Andre Breton includes Dali's denial as to the meaning of his works: "I never have the slightest idea what my pictures mean"; how after painting his wife one autumn afternoon he was "finally able to attain images sufficiently lucid and ‘appetizing' for exhibition in New York"; and ending with a final question; "New York: why why did you erect my statue long ago long before I was born higher than another more desperate than another" Confusion about this statement abounds with some claiming the broadside was distributed at the 1939 World's Fair where Dali had a pavilion or later in 1941 calling it a response to criticism from a statement by Breton. Our research - and Dali's own printed words "I have never been to America" - supports Dali biographer Ian Gibson's belief that this broadside was issued in late 1933 as advance publicity for the painter's first solo American exhibition close on the heels of increased interest in the artist following the Surrealist show the year before that debut his icon painting The Persistence of Memory. Rare. OCLC locates two copies and we have located at third the Queen's Public Library in New York. unknown
19705749New York: Harry N. Abrams In. 1970. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. SIGNED by Dali in customary wild style: "Sinterklaas by Sinterklaas / / December 5 1970" Santa Claus by Santa Claus parodying the book title in Dutch. This copy was acquired from artist Chuck Close's personal library it may have been personally signed to Close or possibly given to him as a Christmas present. Close selected a Dali portrait for his unconventional 1991 curated exhibition Head-On/The Modern Portrait at MOMA and spoke of his appreciation for Dali's "Gala's Back" in interviews. Several of Dali's Gala paintings are featured in this book.Near fine in very good dust jacket with short closed tears to the upper and lower edges. Harry N. Abrams, In. hardcover
1960SAD0021960 Original 10 ¼" x 13" wood engraving in a 20 ¼" x 23" frame. Signed by Dalí in red and signed again in pencil. Original color wood engraving of Minos judging sinners printed on BFK Rives paper with a deckled bottom edge blindstamp of the editor J. Estrade of Les Heures Claires and "g.a. VIII/VIII" numbering in pencil to lower left matted in white and in a black frame. Fine. Overall a memorable work by the great Spanish artist. In 1951 the Italian government commissioned Salvador Dalí to create 101 watercolor illustrations for Dante's The Divine Comedy to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the great Italian author's birth. The decision to hire Dalí who was Spanish and a self-proclaimed "Surrealist void of all moral values" was controversial and the government eventually dropped the commission. Nevertheless Dalí deeply inspired by Dante's masterpiece continued creating watercolors finally completing the project in 1959. Dalí struck a deal with his friend French publisher Joseph Forêt of Les Heures Claires to turn the watercolors into engravings for a lavish illustrated edition of The Divine Comedy. Two master engravers spent five years 1959 - 1964 reproducing the watercolors into wood engravings a process that required roughly 3500 wood blocks around 35 for each print. Three limited editions of Dalí's illustrated version of the Divine Comedy were ultimately released between 1960 and 1974: 4765 in French 3188 in Italian and 1000 in German. In all the project took more than a decade and is now recognized as one of Dalí's most towering achievements. Salvador Dalí 1904 - 1989 was an influential Spanish surrealist artist best known for paintings including The Persistence of Memory 1931 The Elephants 1948 and Cabaret Scene 1922. Dalí illustrated a number of famous literary works throughout his career including Dante's The Divine Comedy Cervantes' Don Quixote Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Shakespeare's Macbeth. The Divine Comedy Dante's allegorical masterpiece describes Dante's journey with the poet Virgil through Hell Purgatory and Heaven. The narrative poem is regarded as one of the greatest works of literature and helped standardize the Italian language as we know it today. Influential modernist poet T.S. Eliot wrote in an essay "Dante and Shakespeare divide the modern world between them; there is no third." In Inferno Canto V Dante and Virgil reach the second circle of Hell and witness the monster Minos judge and assign a line of sinners to their respective torments. The number of times Minos wraps his tail around himself determines which level of Hell a sinner will be sent to. . Fine. Illus. by Dalí Salvador. Lithograph. paperback

1963150996Paris: Jean-Jacques Pauvert 1963. Inscribed by Dali First edition inscribed by the artist across the title page "Pour Christine Vaclasmy Dali 1963" with a loose sketch of a figure possibly a girl skipping a common motif in Dalí's work. The Angelus by Jean-Francois Millet is an oil painting completed between 1857 and 1859. It depicts two figures in a field heads bowed over a basket of potatoes in their recitation of the Catholic devotional prayer. It had a significant impact on Dali who saw a print of the painting early in life and insisted that it did not depict a prayer but a funeral scene. The Louvre at his request had the painting examined by x-ray and showed that there was originally a small coffin-shaped object painted in place of the basket. This discovery is included in the prologue and much of the text depends upon Dalí's interpretation of The Angelus as a tragic image of American folklore. Dalí created several paintings inspired by the titular work: The Architectural Angelus of Millet and Gala 1933 and Gala and the Angelus of Millet Preceding the Imminent Arrival of the Conical Anamorphoses 1933. These were followed two years later by a similar pair of paintings which included a partial reproduction of Millet's Angelus called The Angelus of Gala and Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet's Angelus. Quarto. Illustrated throughout by Salvador Dali 33 plates tipped in. Original beige cloth with woven strap and buckle titles to front cover on octagonal plate in red and black black and white illustration of The Angelus to front cover on rectangular plate.
