1944058573New York: The Dial Press 1944. First Edition 1st Printing. Black Cloth. Very Good /No Dust Jacket. Two Plates. Xviii 414 Pp. Two Copies One Each Of Two Issues Identical In Every Respect Except For The Thickness And The Placement Of The Frontispiece. One Is 1 5/16" Thick The Frontispiece Faces The Title Page And The Paper Is Heavier. The Other Is Slightly Less Than 1 3/16" Thick The Frontispiece Faces Forward Recto The Paper Is Clearly Lighter And There Is A Touch Of Smudging To The Page Number "Ii". Given The Prominence Given To The Statement On The Copyright Page Showing Compliance With Wartime Printing Requirements Which The First Issue Clearly Does Not Meet I Would Assume The Thicker Book Was Printed First And The Thinner Soon After. Both Are Very Nice Completely Clean And Evenly-Colored Examples Each With Neat And Small Owners' Names. However The Thicker Volume Has The Bottom Corner Of P 411/412 Torn Away Without Any Wrinkling Or Other Damage But Much Loss Of Text Which May Be A Printing Error But May Just Have Been Torn Away Inexplicably As The Pages Appear Crisp And Unread.

The Dial Press hardcover
