Acquaforte misure: mm 160 x 230 Incisore tedesco, secondogenito del pittore e incisore Daniel Hopfer (Kaufbeuren 1470 - Augusta 1536). Sulla sua formazione artistica si hanno poche notizie, tuttavia sappiamo che nel 1529 grazie al Consiglio della città di Augusta si reca a Norimberga e le sue opere sono perlopiù di traduzione da maestri tedeschi o italiani quali Mantegna. Anche il fratello Lambert è stato un incisore. Si conoscono 77 lastre incise da Hieronimus. Da un soggetto di Mantegna oggi non rintracciabile tuttavia in stretta relazione con gli altri baccanali incisi da Mantegna. Il soggetto è stato inciso nello stesso verso a fine quattrocento da anonimo e ancora in controparte da Giovanni Antonio da Brescia a inizio Cinquecento. A Chatsworth è conservato un disegno che potrebbe essere il modello benché considerato anch'esso una derivazione dal modello perduto di Mantegna. Hopfer, rispetto alle due incisioni più antiche, si discosta aggiungendo il tronco d'albero sulla sinistra che contestualizza la scena rendendola meno astratta. Esemplare con l'aggiunta del numero 111 in basso a sinistra. L'editore e tipografo tedesco David Funk, attivo fra il 1682 e il 1709, acquistò un gran numero di lastre prodotte da Daniel, Hieronymus e Lambert Hopfer nel XVII secolo e le numerò prima di procedere alla stampa. Monogramma inciso entro la botte. Impressione eccellente con velatura di fondo, carta leggera vergellata, piccoli margini. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Stato: II/III.
