This deluxe art volume Grandi Monografie d'Arte a cura di Paolo Lecaldano is a scholarly and detailed examination of Mantegna's decorative artwork The Camera picta "painted chamber" also popularly known as the Camera degli Sposi or "bridal chamber"—is a room frescoed with illusionistic paintings by Andrea Mantegna in the Ducal Palace Mantua Italy. It was painted between 1465 and 1474 and commissioned by Ludovico Gonzaga and is notable for the use of trompe l'oeil details and its di sotto in sù ceiling. The "Court Scene" on the north wall shows Ludovico Gonzaga dressed informally with his wife Barbara of Brandenburg. They are seated with their relatives while a group of courtiers fill the rest of the wall. The figures interact with an illusionistically expanded space is depicted. On the west wall is the "Meeting scene". This fresco shows Ludovico in official robes in an ideal meeting with his son cardinal Francesco Gonzaga the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III and Christian I of Denmark. Mantegna's playful ceiling presents an oculus that illusionistically opens into a blue sky with foreshortened putti playfully frolicking around a balustrade. Réfractaires dans l’âme mais ultra réactifs, ses collaborateurs qui, pour la plupart, ont une longue expérience littéraire derrière eux, combattent les maîtres à penser en faveur vers 1950 et les gloires qu’ils jugent usurpées. Quo Vadis donne carrière à une génération de poètes et de critiques qui n’est pas celle de la « modernité » à la mi-temps du siècle. Mais la verdeur de ton avec laquelle la revue malmène à plaisir les écrivains honorés de son époque, la préserve de la fossilisation. Elle se partage donc entre des articles au vitriol, dans l’héritage des grands pamphlétaires, la publication de poètes « aux luttes mémorables » ou celle de fantaisistes singuliers. Elle fait aussi la part belle aux études savantes. Plus que des contributions lénitives à l’histoire littéraire, il s’agit très souvent de véritables morceaux de littérature. Quo Vadis prétend ne pas se mêler de politique. Elle s’y risque pourtant avec assiduité en critiquant les prises de positions des intellectuels, surtout lorsqu’elles voisinent avec le communisme, ou l’hyprocisie. La revue de Jacques-Louis Aubrun, issue de la Résistance, affiche une certaine cohérence : elle s’ouvre en 1947 avec un réquisitoire contre l’action de De Gaulle au pouvoir et se referme en 1958, redoutant son retour".
