Mm 265x195 Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506) ha lasciato due fondamentali cicli pittorici: quello della Cappella Ovetari di Padova e la decorazione della Camera degli Sposi di Mantova. Il primo è andato quasi totalmente perduto nel 1943 (si sono salvate solo due scene) per un bombardamento. Qui se ne parla sulla base della documentazione fotografica degli anni precedenti che permette comunque di cogliere la straordinaria potenza espressiva di questo pittore. Sono stati gli affreschi padovani a procurare al Mantegna la commissione, da parte di Ludovico Gonzaga, per la decorazione di una delle camere del suo castello di Mantova, primo esempio di decorazione illusionistica e soprattutto rivoluzionaria concezione della decorazione pittorica.
