72294ca. 1965. Bronze sculpture. Ca. 175 x 100 x 75 cm. = A beautiful cold-painted bronze of three different species of Amazon parrots on the branches of a tree made by the Dutch sculptor Gerda van den Bosch born 1929. "Gerda van den Bosch was born . on the Island of Java then part of the Dutch East Indies. Pre-war Java was a child's paradise with exotic plants and animals. But her idyllic life was shattered by war and internment. Gerda was deprived of her greatest joy her pets. Some 50 pigeons. In the internmentcamp she created her lost friends from pieces of wood and on small paper cuttings. All her 50 pigeons were portrayed. Today these miniatures remain a personal memoriam to these dark years. After the war Gerda completed her education by becoming a teacher. In Biology too so enhancing her knowledge about the structure of life forms. However. the next ten years she worked together with the very skilled sculptor Marcus Ravenswaay who became her teacher. Her first major commission that brought her to the attention of the public was a bronze dog waiting for his master. This figure stands in front of a railway station. This expressive bronze produced a flood of further commissions. Her work was soon expanded to cover other animals and the human form her figures ranging from miniatures to larger groups destined for either private collections or public display." from her website. The species depicted in this bronze are a blue-and-yellow macaw Ara ararauna Linnaeus; a scarlet macaw Ara macao L. and a military macaw Ara militaris L. or perhaps a hybrid. One "feather" partly broken otherwise in very good condition; the birds accurately modelled in lively positions the colours bright and natural. A unique item of great beauty. unknown

En dépit de la météorologie toujours un peu ""à la traîne"" le printemps de 1955 s'annonce magnifique à Paris"" s. l. Paris 1955 21 x 27 cm 2 pages sur 2 feuillets Autograph manuscript signed by André Breton written in black ink on two sheets of green paper. Horizontal fold to each sheet pagination in red pencil on the 2nd sheet. Published in the journal Art 1955. Breton delivers an impeccable literary and artistic chronicle for spring 1955 focusing on the feminine explored through painting and poetry. He marvels at a copy of Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Delights soon to be auctioned and compares it to Histoire d'O praises the merits of Roger Droguet's collection of poems Féminaire and pays tribute to the continuous celebration of femininity in the surrealist canvases of Max Walter Svanberg exhibited at the gallery « L'Etoile scellée » in March and April 1955.
ABC_48894Leeuwarden: printed by Abraham Ferwerda and Gerrit Tresling 1770. Later half vellum boards covered with paper manuscript title in black ink on the spine blue sprinkled edges. Small folio ca. 31 x 20 cm. With the title page set within a red decorative border 21 full-page mezzotint portraits with 3- or 4-line captions in Dutch and 10 woodcut tailpieces. Rare first and only edition of a concise history of the Stadtholders of the Dutch provinces of Friesland Groningen and Drenthe written by Johannes van den Bosch 1713-1784. It contains short biographies and genealogies of various members of the House of Orange-Nassau and their wives covering the period of 800-1769. The text ends with a description of the tombs of the Frisian Nassaus located in the Grote of Jacobijnerkerk in Leeuwarden. Van den Bosch was a Dutch merchant and director of the bank of loan in Leeuwarden. He dedicated this work to Stadtholder William V Prince of Orange 1748-1806 dated Leeuwarden 2 July 1770.The biographies are illustrated with 21 full-page engraved portraits all executed in the rare mezzotint technique using a black background for the effect of half-tones. The identity of the printmaker of these remarkable engravings is still not identified although Van Someren ascribes it to Rienk Jelgerhuis 1729-1806 a Dutch artist and engraver who was born in Leeuwarden. This attribution is understandable due to the fact that this work is sometimes accompanied by Jelgerhuis' print series of a royal funeral not present in our copy titled Nauwkeurige afbeelding der lijk-statie van . Maria Louisa geboren Princesse van Hessen-Kassel douarière van Johan Willem Friso . which was published in 1765 in Leeuwarden by Abraham Ferwerda and Rienk Jelgerhuis cf. FM 4160.From the celebrated library of the Dutch jurist Mr. F.C. Koch 1873-1957 with his bookplate and label mounted on the front pastedown including a few annotations in pencil regarding the possible identity of the engraver. Previously from the collection of the Dutch bookseller A.J. van Tetroode 1796-1875 with his oval labels in respectively Dutch and French mounted in the lower blank margin of the title page and on the blank verso of p. 87. Also with the collectors mark of the Dutch architect and artist C. Kramm 1797-1875 on the title page. Further with an extensive manuscript annotation in black ink on the first free endpaper concerning a portrait of William I Count of Nassau-Siegen 1487-1559 and with a green owner's stamp on the back pastedown. The spine and back board are slightly soiled the paper over the boards is partly worn lacking part of the bottom left corner on the back board front hinge slightly weakened inner blank margin of 2 preliminary leaves and 1 mezzotint portrait water stained a few annotations in black ink in the text. First and only edition of this biography of the illustrious stadholder and king William III and his wife Maria Stuart by Lambert van den Bosch 1620-1698 the former head of the Latin school at Dordrecht who published this work with his Latin initials "L.S." standing for Lambertus Sylvus. The plates mostly made by Jan and Caspar Luyken depict several important episodes in the life of William III such as the siege of Grave in 1674 the departure of William and his fleet to England in 1688 his coronation in London in 1689 and several other battles and conquests. Some of the Luyken plates were re-used in the biography of William III by Arnoldud Montanus which was also published by Jan ten Hoorn in Amsterdam in 1703.The present copy has been beautifully bound by the "Fleur-de-Lis bindery" or "Heraldische Lelie-binderij" 1735-1740 in The Hague for the wealthy Amsterdam merchant Aron de Joseph de Pinto 1710-1758. De Pinto was of Jewish-Portuguese descent and a well-known book collector. He had his books bound mainly by two binders one in Amsterdam 1743-65 and one in the Hague. His crowned coat of arms with 5 crescent moons is the centrepiece of both boards his crowned monogram is present over 4 compartments on the spine of each volume. The edges and corners of the boards are somewhat scuffed the spine of the second volume is partly detached. With an engraved allegorical frontispiece a woodcut vignette on the title page 37 double-page engraved plates views and plans several decorated woodcut initials and tail pieces. 4 parts in 2 volumes. First and only Dutch edition of this important illustrated history of the so-called "Rampjaar" when the Dutch Republic was attacked by France England and the bishops of Cologne and Munster together and at the same time. The work includes 20 fine copper engraved illustrations by Romeyn de Hooghe which are noteworthy for depicting the social history of the period including 8 evocative double-page copper plates recording French war crimes and sufferings of Dutch civilians. According to Landwehr the work also offers a "very detailed and accurate account of the war between the Republic and France and other nations. Interesting is one of the oldest accounts of the colony of Surinam where about 500 European settlers lived." There was a strong call for the appointment of the Prince of Orange William III as Captain General and the new Stadtholder which was realised on 25 February 1672 making an end to the "Stadthouderloze tijdperk" Stadtholder-less era. With raging and plundering French and other armies occupying large areas of Holland Utrecht and the eastern parts of the Republic the situation looked hopeless. Through intelligent military operations and Hollands superior sea power however William III the later King of England was able to save the Republic.Lambert van den Bosch 1620-1698 was rector and con-rector of various Latin schools including the schools at Helmond Dordrecht Heemstede and Amsterdam. In Dordrecht he was fired by Cornelis de Witt because of his alcohol problem: probably one of the reasons Van der Bosch became an Orangist. Next to his teaching profession he has written a great number of translations including the first translation into Dutch of Cervantes compilations original literary work and history books including biographies of Stadtholder William III Mary Stuart Michiel de Ruyter and other naval heroes and the present history of the years 1669-1674 concentrating on the Rampjaar 1672 of which a translation into German was published in 1675. Van den Bosch intended his history also as a continuation of the historical work by Lieuwe van Aitzema. With the bookplate of the Wetenschappelijke Bibliotheek Eindhoven mounted on the front pastedown of both volumes and a paper label stating that the work was a gift from Harterink mounted on the first free flyleaf of both volumes. The bindings are somewhat soiled. The half title of volume 2 is partly detached the leaves are somewhat browned especially at the end of the second volume some edges are frayed one of the plates with a cut-out ca. 5 x 3 cm some marginal staining and soiling some marginal wormholes.
