Fue uno de los poquísimos deportados que dejó escritos sus recuerdos de deportación valioso documento histórico que refleja las vicisitudes a que se veían sometidos los patriotas rebeldes.</p><p>Nacido en La Habana el 9 de marzo de 1852. Desde muy joven abrazó la línea independentista y para enrolarse en una de las expediciones que lograban salir de los Estados Unidos para Cuba embarca el 21 de agosto de 1869 desde el puerto de La Habana en el Missouri ocultándose en su bodega donde es tomado prisionero en el momento de partir para ser encarcelado y confinado a Isla de Pinos.</p><p>En su libro Mis buenos tiempos Cabrera narra cómo hizo el viaje de Batabanó a Isla de Pinos con 37 deportados procedentes de distintas partes de Cuba que iban a ser arrojados a una isla pobre despoblada sin industria sin agricultura sin trabajo llegando allí con la incertidumbre de lo desconocido preguntándose qué nuevas angustias y miserias les tendría reservado allí el destino. La lectura de su amplia obra devela todo el difícil mosaico político y cultural de ese período. Abogado de formación también ejerció como periodista. Escribió importantes libros que tienen el valor de ser parte de una literatura que hoy sería calificada como testimonial. Publicó también una muy interesante literatura de viajes que por supuesto está por estudiar. Fue narrador y dramaturgo. En su libro <em>Sombras eternas</em> de 1919 expresa definitivamente el carácter frustrante de la República.
