Gutes Ex. - Die Arbeit behandelt eines der schwierigsten Themen der neueren Kunstgeschichte: die Seerosenbilder Claude Monets. Die Nympheas, die Blumen, die in seinem selbstangelegten Teich in Giverny wuchsen, sind das Hauptthema der letzten 30 Jahre seines Schaffens und ein letzter Höhepunkt seines Werkes. Der Zugang jedoch zu diesen Bildern blieb bisher problematisch, dies zeigt auch die geringe Zahl der kunstgeschichtlichen Veröffentlichungen zum Thema. Die Schwierigkeiten bei der Annäherung liegen nicht nur im Seriencharakter der Bilder begründet, sondern in ihrer Ambivalenz : Form läßt sich nicht von Farbe trennen, Farbe nicht von Licht - es ist ein Gegenstand da, und doch entsteht Gehalt erst durch die Darstellungsweise. Die menschliche Wahrnehmung selbst wird hier thematisiert und zugleich problematisiert und mit ihr das Verständnis der Zeit von Wirklichkeit, die Dynamisierung der Weltvorstellungen. Ideelle Beziehungen bestehen zu anderen Kunstströmungen der Zeit, zu Symbolismus, Jugendstil, Vitalismus und anderen. In dieser Untersuchung nun gelingt es, ausgehend von einer konkreten Bildanalyse, den Nympheas völlig neue, weiterführende Aspekte abzugewinnen und Zusammenhänge aufzuzeigen, die für die Beurteilung der klassischen Moderne zentral sind.
