Assembled in a single folio volume with the three original lithographic front covers bound in.""Fifty years ago in Paris the magazine to look for was Verve which first came out in December 1937 and kept going in one form or another till 1960. That first cover by Henri Matisse sang out from the other side of the street in a way that made us run across the road to look at it more closely. And when we turned its pages Verve had a bosomy full-fleshed slightly slithery quality that this former subscriber would know in his sleep"" John Russell. Art critic Efstratios Eleftheriades under the nom de plume ""Tériade"" founded Verve with the financial assistance of David Smart publisher of Esquire. The second issue with its original lithographic front cover by Braque includes original lithographs by Kandinsky and Masson photographs by Bill Brandt and Brassaï and the first publication of Hemingway's The Heat and the Cold together with his piece on the filming of The Spanish Earth that was later included in the book The Spanish Earth 1938 as well as the first appearance of James Joyce's Phoenix Park Nocturne. Number 3 with an original front cover by Bonnard offers original lithographs by Chagall Miró Rattner and Klee together with articles by such leading French writers as Valéry Malraux Claudel and Bataille. The culminating issue in this exceptional collection features an original lithographic front cover by Rouault an original double-page lithograph of Matisse's The Dance photographs by Brandt and Brassaï and articles by Michaux Garcia Lorca and Sartre. Édition en partie originale, illustrée de 8 bois gravés par Manolo, dont quatre à pleine page. Tirage limité à 112 exemplaires, celui-ci un des 90 exemplaires sur Hollande (n°76) signés à l'encre par le poète et l'artiste. Le seul livre illustré par Manuel Martinez Hugué, dit Manolo. Manolo (1872-1945), sculpteur et peintre catalan né à Barcelone, vint à Paris dès 1892, puis de 1901 à 1910. Juan Gris, Braque et Picasso vinrent le rejoindre, pour d'assez longs séjours, lorsqu'il se fixa à Céret dans les Pyrénées. « Il était un des rares aînés de Picasso à le traiter comme un jeune homme » (Pierre Daix). À partir de 1910, grâce au soutien de D.-H. Kahnweiler, son marchand et l'éditeur de l'ouvrage présenté ici, il obtient du succès : il expose à l’Armory Show de 1913 à New York puis en Allemagne et à Paris. Par la suite, il présente régulièrement ses œuvres aux Etats-Unis, en Espagne et en France. En 1932, la France le célèbre en lui consacrant une importante exposition au Grand Palais. Comme pour les toreros ou les gitanes, la maternité constitue l’un des sujets récurrents de l’œuvre de Manolo : Mère et fils (1929), Maternité au baiser (1929), Maternité (1938), Maternité à la grappe de raisin (1940). Manolo utilise chaque occurrence du thème pour explorer une solution plastique nouvelle.
1959184233Paris: Maeght 1959. A handsome French production First edition deluxe issue number 5 of 50 copies printed on Montval paper and signed by the artist and the poet. This is Pierre Reverdy's final poetry collection "The Freedom of the Seas" illustrated in this grand edition by his lifelong friend George Braque. Reverdy stopped writing poetry during the Second World War but had a surge of inspiration resulted in this collection and one other "Au soleil du plafond". This collection was completed in 1955 but was unpublished until Braque finished his illustrations in 1959 just before the poet's death. A further 200 signed copies on Grand Velin D'arches paper were issued simultaneously. This copy is without the additional lithographs issued with the deluxe limitation. Large folio. With 7 full-page colour plates including cover and frontispiece monochrome lithographs throughout. Original brown illustrated wrappers sheets loosely inserted as issued. With the original grey cloth folder and slipcase. Occasional foxing to contents especially to final gathering; folder and slipcase mottled with a few splits at joins. A very good copy. hardcover
