Un volume in-folio en feuilles, couverture illustrée d'une gravure en couleurs à l'aquatinte et carborundum, vernie par l'artiste lui-même, étui-chemise éditeur décoré de collages de papiers de couleur. - 20 EAUX-FORTES ORIGINALES DE GEORGES BRAQUE : 16 gravures hors-texte exécutées en 1932 pour Ambroise Vollard, et 4 gravures réalisées en 1953 : la couverture en 5 couleurs vernie au pinceau par l'artiste, le frontispice en 2 couleurs, la tête de chapitre et le cul-de-lampe. - Tirage à 150 exemplaires numérotés sur Auvergne et signés par l'artiste. Celui-ci le n° 23 signé par Braque. Tirage unique - Conservé en parfait état. - Note historique : En 1931, Braque illustre la Théogonie du poète grec Hésiode (VIIe siècle av. J.-C) pour le marchand, éditeur et passionné de gravure, Ambroise Vollard. Le récit, consacré à la naissance de l’univers et à l’origine des dieux, est considéré comme l’un des grands textes de la mythologie grecque. Entre 1932 et 1935, l’artiste exécute une série de seize eaux-fortes qui seront publiées par Maeght en 1955 : ligne noire imprimée sur fond blanc pour les gravures et, en négatif, ligne blanche découpée sur fond noir pour les plâtres peints et gravés que Braque crée en parallèle. Comme les figures mythologiques et les natures mortes de l’époque, ces œuvres possèdent un style curvilinéaire et propice à la métamorphose. Overall: 18 x 13 7/8 in. (457 x 352 mm.) Condition : near mint, a beautiful copy with the editor decorated slipcase in near mint condition too.

Isolated faint marginal foxing slight crease to title page but a VERY FINE COPY clean fresh and bright internally in a pristine binding.<br/> <br/> Bound to a sculptural Art Deco design and elegantly illustrated and inscribed by a great 20th century artist this is a collection of five poems about "sapates"--valuable gifts hidden inside a gift of lesser value such as a diamond ring inside a cupcake. Our volume does not fall under this category: its outside is every bit as impressive as the contents. The celebrated French artist Georges Braque 1882-1963 was a painter collagist printmaker and sculptor who made important contributions to the Fauves movement in the early 20th century and to the development of Cubism in which he and Picasso were the leading lights. The illustrations here done near the end of his long career depict the five "sapates"--oil olives a jug a rough sketch of a fish a shutter--in simple black and white with more realism than his Cubist works but still in simple pared-down lines. To accompany the inscription of this volume to banker Max Pellequer d. 1974 nephew of Picasso's friend André Level Braque added a small painting of cerulean blue leaves a single note of color in the blacks whites and grays of the text and one picked up by binder François Brindeau who used that hue for the lettering on the covers. Brindeau studied at the École Estienne graduating in 1976 and then worked with Jean de Gonet. He created the present binding for bibliophile and former Olympic rowing medalist Maurice Houdayer 1931-2020 a connoisseur of contemporary bindings who had a great love of Art Deco. Houdayer served as president of the Amis de la Reliure Originale and assembled an impressive collection of illustrated books in bindings he commissioned from innovative designers. Montpellier-born poet Francis Ponge 1899-1988 was known as "the poet of things" because he wrote about simple everyday objects like the subjects of the present work. His poetry invites us to contemplate often overlooked commonplace objects and perhaps in doing so to discover something about the human psyche. Literary critic David Gascoyne noted that Ponge "addressed himself to the common reader in the hope of persuading us that poetry is not merely a preoccupation of the idle and overeducated.". L'ouvrage est illustré de 4 reproductions de dessins dans le texte et de 42 planches, dont 2 en couleurs, reproduisant des œuvres de Picasso des années 1920-1926. La gravure accompagnant ce tirage de luxe, "Femme au fauteuil", fait partie d'une série réalisée en 1922-1923 dans laquelle les lignes superposées donnent à voir les figures à la fois de face et de profil. Le zinc est perdu. Un des 50 exemplaires sur Hollande van Gelder, les seuls avec les 6 sur Japon à comprendre la gravure originale, celui-ci le n°13 (quelques piqûres à la gravure et à la couverture).
