Le volume contient en tête un texte de René Char « Sous la verrière » le premier et le plus important des textes de Char jamais consacré à Georges Braque « allié substantiel ». Ce dernier l'illustre d'une lithographie en couleurs et de cinq dessins inédits en fac-similé. Le texte d'hommage de Char est rédigé trois ans après la rencontre avec le peintre : une « conversation souveraine » devenue amitié qui s'approfondit selon la phrase de Braque « chemin faisant ».
