Text in French. <br /> <br /> IDHEC was founded in Paris during World War II in order to offer training for virtually every aspect of film production. It counted a veritable who's who of prominent filmmakers among its graduates including Louis Malle Claire Denis Jean-Jacques Annaud Volker Schlöndorff Andrzej u awski and Costa-Gavras among many others. Resnais attended IDHEC for one year from 1943-1944 training as a film editor before leaving in 1945 for military service. <br /> <br /> "Gauguin" was part of an early series of documentary short films about artists created by Resnais between 1946 and 1953 preceded by "Van Gogh" 1949 winner of an Academy Award and followed by "Guernica" 1950 in collaboration with Robert Hessens.<br /> <br /> 8.25 x 10.75 inches. Two printed in black and red. 8; 1; 4 p. <p><br /> Two exhibition invitations and a catalog of Paul Gauguin’s show from the collection of Emil Szittya.<br /> <p><p><br /> This collection includes a catalog of Paul Gauguin’s 1931 exhibition held in Le Portique Paris with a list of works exhibited and two invitations one to the exhibition of the avant-garde artist Jean Pougny and another to Fernand Léger’s show.<br /> <p><p><br /> All three are marked with the collection stamp of Emil Szittya Émile or Emile Lesitt Emil Szytia Oscar Ray Karl Stammer Verista; 1886–1964 a Hungarian-born artist. At the age of fourteen he started his wandering around Europe getting to know some of the most influential avant-garde artists of the time such as Lajos Kassák Pablo Picasso Marc Chagall Henri Rousseau Tristan Tzara Hans Richter Chaim Soutine and Blaise Cendrars with whom they published the anarchist magazine “Les hommes nouveauxâ€. In 1915 in Zürich he got acquainted with the leaders of the communist movement Lenin and Trotsky. He published several books on artists and numerous articles and essays in various art magazines. Galerie Barbazanges Paris 1919 15 x 23.20 cm cousu Exhibition catalogue of Paul Gauguin's works at the Galerie Barbazanges 109 Faubourg Saint-Honoré from 10 to 30 October 1919. Illustrated with Gauguin's splendid colour self-portrait with halo and serpent wood-engraved by Jules Germain. Essay by François Norgelet entitled ""Gauguin au Pouldu"". Catalogue of 28 works by Gauguin including two lithographs and two plaster casts. Minute black spot in the margin of the front wrapper. The exhibition at the Galerie Barbazanges revealed previously unknown works that Gauguin produced during his stay at Le Pouldu in Brittanny between 1889 and 1890. Living alongside Sérusier Bernard de Haan and Filiger Gauguin painted there some one hundred imaginative and colourful canvases inspired by this artistic retreat where they led a vibrant life of plein-air work and conversations in the thick smoke of cigarettes and pipes: ""ils étaient tous trois pieds nus débraillés superbement au verbe sonore. Je vis l'un deux plus tard chez Mallarmé : c'était Gauguin"" They were all three barefoot magnificently disheveled with sonorous speech. I saw one of them later at Mallarmés: it was Gauguin recalled André Gide in Si le grain ne meurt. Gauguin would leave the inn without settling his bill leaving as a deposit most of the works he had created at Le Pouldu with his landlady and mistress Marie Henry. The innkeeper parted with them in 1919 at the time of this exhibitionwith the exception of a Gardeuse d'oies and an Oie which Gauguin had painted directly on the plaster of the Breton inn and were rediscovered in 1924. Presentando con passione i costumi la storia e i paesaggi di Tahiti quest'opera è anche un'autobiografia del pittore. Scritto nel 1893 a Parigi da appunti presi a Tahiti questo libro voleva illuminare il pubblico sulle tele dipinte in Polinesia che sembravano troppo misteriose o esoteriche. Alcune pagine sono vere e proprie accuse contro la società" occidentale. Gauguin chiese al suo grande amico Charles Morice poeta simbolista di formattare il "libro per far capire la sua pittura". Ma la pubblicazione del testo completata nel 1894 ha incontrato molti ostacoli. Nel 1897 dopo i tentativi falliti di Charles Morice Gauguin cercò";" di farlo pubblicare a Tahiti ma invano: "Spero ancora di vedere Noa Noa stampato prima di morire" scrisse poi a Morice. Parte del testo apparve su La Revue Blanche nel 1897 e poi per estratti nel 1901 su La Plume e L'Action humaine. Morice allora manovra per pubblicare Noa Noa senza informare Gauguin. Il 12 aprile 1901 Gauguin pubblicò"; anche alcuni brani sul giornale tahitiano per il quale lavorava Les Guêpes prima di trasferirsi nelle Marchesi. Dopo aver chiesto l'aiuto di Mallarmé Morice riuscì finalmente a pubblicare Noa Noa nel luglio 1901 per suo conto. Ma l'edizione non è approvata da Gauguin a causa di problemi di copyright mal negoziati. Rifiutò" la proposta di Morice di farsi spedire 100 copie ma chiese segretamente a Daniel de Monfreid: "Abbiamo stampato Noa Noa a mia insaputa. Se ci metti le mani sopra mandamene una copia" novembre 1901. Gauguin non riceverà"; mai una sola copia e morirà senza aver visto finalmente pubblicato il suo manoscritto più importante. </em> <em>Quando Gauguin si impegnò a scrivere il racconto del suo primo soggiorno a Tahiti poco sicuro delle sue capacità di scrittura chiese a Morice allora a Bruxelles di rivedere il manoscritto di Noa Noa. Morice ha svolto questo compito e ha pubblicato il testo riveduto su La Revue blanche. I commentatori concordano nel considerare che l'intervento di Morice ha distorto il lavoro di Gauguin. Limited to 320 copies of which this is no. 60.</strong></p><p><strong>Description:</strong> Publisher's cloth binding title blocked in red to upper cover and spine. Quarto: 31 × 25 cm; pp. 204. Tipped in label of the Marées-Gesellschaft Hylas motif. Numerous mostly tipped in illustrations. Printed on specially made untrimmed handmade paper that imitates the feel of the original manuscript.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Despite its age a very well-preserved copy with no significant signs of wear.</p><p><strong>Notes:</strong> The editor Julius Meier-Graefe - one of the most influential art critics of his time - had already outlined Gauguin's significance for the development of European art in his "Entwicklungsgeschichte der modernen Kunst" 1904. He saw 'Noa Noa' not just as a simple notebook but as an independent Gesamtkunstwerk consisting of a network of text and images which he believed should be made accessible to the public.</p><p>As the printing processes available at the time did not allow for colour-accurate reproductions the complex and expensive collotype process was used to reproduce the original manuscript now in the Louvre. Collotype printing is still considered the highest quality process today as it reproduces colour nuances brush structure and paper texture much more faithfully than conventional printing processes. To give the edition an authentic resemblance to the original handmade paper specially produced for this purpose was also used for printing. Meier-Graefe personally supervised every step of the printing process to ensure that the colours of the original watercolours had the 'Blindheit' blindness und 'Gleißkraft' brilliance that Gauguin had described in his letters Meier-Graefe 1926.</p><p>However 'Noa Noa' represents not only the pursuit of perfection but also the yearning for authenticity in an increasingly technological world.</p> Marées-Gesellschaft/R.
