1902127687BRIGHTON: BRIGHTON BOROUGH POLICE 1902 Ivory Buckram cloth boards 185 x 130 mm approx. xxxii 242 pp addenda. Edition not stated - dated April 1902 to title page printed by King Thorne & Stace Printers Jubilee Street Brighton. A very interesting item which gives an insight into policing in Brighton at the turn of the 19th century. Whilst much of the general instructions would appertained to Police forces generally there is much which relates specifically to Brighton ie Brighton Borough Acts Town Acts and Bye Laws including table of distances from the town hall and from various places within the borough with fares 1st and 2nd class stands for Hackney Carriages etc. According to Baines' History of Brighton Police 1838-1967 there were 150 Police officers serving Brighton in 1902. The printer's code on the title page 1248-4/1902-250 would suggest that the print run was 250 copies. In view of the likelihood it would have been a requirement to surrender up the handbook when retiring or dismissal from the force and copies extant when a new or revised handbook was issued would have been redundant and disposed of the copy offered is a very rare survivor. Good The plain buckram cloth boards are stained and soiled recent replacement of free front end paper with best match paper stock as bought in by us lacking same. pencil note to top margin p182 regarding powers of arrest. A little light occassional soiling but book block respectably clean and binding sound. Please see our images of the actual book offered for sale for further details and condition.
