Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) ist seit mehr als einem Jahrhundert der »Künstler der Künstler«, und ein Ende der von seinem Werk ausgehenden Inspiration ist nicht abzusehen. Auch wenn mehr als 60 Jahre zwischen ihnen liegen, drängen sich die Parallelen zwischen Leben und Werken von Cézanne und Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) geradezu auf. Beide Männer begannen mit einer heftigen Schaffensperiode, geprägt durch Sexualität und innere Kämpfe, bis eine entscheidende kreative Wende sie sich dem Problem der realistischen Darstellung zuwenden ließ. Auch wenn Giacomettis Arbeiten stilistisch scheinbar keine Ähnlichkeit zu denen Cézannes aufweisen, bezog er sich doch häufig auf den Meister aus Aix-en-Provence. Die vorliegende Publikation untersucht die Entwicklung dieser Beziehung und weist nach, wie die Betrachtung von Giacomettis Werk die künstlerische Leistung Cézannes in neuem Licht zeigen kann.
