Essa però si presta ad essere messa in rapporto ed in dialogo con la ricerca artistica nell'ambito del visivo, e in particolare, relativamente ai nostri interessi, con la pittura. Ciò non è dovuto tanto al fatto che nell'opera bachtiniana si possano trovare riferimenti alle arti visive o al fatto che l'estetica bachtiniana spesso allarghi il proprio discorso spostandolo dal campo della letteratura a quello della produzione artistica in generale. La possibilità di far incontrare dialogicamente la ricerca bachtiniana con quella pittorica dipende piuttosto dal ruolo che in entrambe gioca la raffigurazione in contrasto con la riproduzione, la rappresentazione, l'imitazione. La questione riguarda la concezione e l'impiego dei segni, ed è quindi di ordine semiotico. E il segno che è direttamente coinvolto nella ricerca pittorica di Kazimir Malevic? e di Marc Chagall, come pure nella teoria della raffigurazione estetica di Bachtin, è l'icona. Tale tipo di segno occupa un posto centrale anche nella semiotica di Charles Sanders Peirce in quanto maggiormente capace di innovazione e di inventiva.

Offered here is an original color lithograph from his portfolio "Bible Lithographs" published in Verve in 1956. The image was later pictured in the catalogue for the grand opening of the Marc Chagall National Museum in Nice in 1973. Not long before Henri Matisse's death in 1954 Pablo Picasso remarked "When Matisse dies Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is."
