Altersentsprechend guter Zustand. -- Die Geschichte Picassos ist so noch nie erzählt, sein Gesamtwerk bisher keiner derart konsequent-kritischen Sichtung unterworfen worden. Für den bekannten marxistischen Kunstkritiker John Berger ist dieses Œuvre keineswegs ein allen Maßstäben entzogener Superlativ. Der Autor zeigt, welche Interessen den Mythos von der unerschöpflichen Kraft und Herrlichkeit des Genies Picassos erzeugt und erhalten haben. Das Buch hält sich jedoch nicht mit einer kritischen Beschreibung der gängigen Kunstmarkt-Praktiken auf (obwohl es schlüssig erklärt, warum sich heute mit der Ware Kunst so hohe Preise erzielen lassen). John Berger hat eine für jedermann verständliche Geschichte der modernen Kunst geschrieben, die in ihrer begrifflichen Genauigkeit und analytischen Beweisführung ihresgleichen sucht; auch insofern, als der Autor an keiner Stelle Opfer jener linksradikalen Kinderkrankheit geworden ist, die hierzulande so manchen Theoretiker befallen hat, wenn er Anschluß an eine lange vernachlässigte Methode sucht: Nicht selten erschöpft sich ja eine "Theorie" in der mechanischen Häufung terminologischer Spezifika. Am Beispiel Picassos wird ermittelt, in welchem Verhältnis das Freiheitsbedürfnis des Künstlers zum Emanzipationsbegehren der Massen in unserer Gesellschaft steht und in welchem Verhältnis es stehen könnte. Berger macht die Alternativen deutlich und wo, für die moderne Kunst, sie zum erstenmal gestellt waren : bei Cézanne und Courbet. Die einzige glaubwürdige Synthese bisher sieht er im Kubismus. Picasso war sich seiner überdurchschnittlichen produktiven Kraft, doch nicht seiner exzeptionellen Situation bewußt. So stieß er, auf der Suche nach geeigneten Themen, immer häufiger nur noch auf sich selbst und wurde, hilflos und von seinen Freunden ohne Hilfe gelassen, zum Lieblingsmaler der internationalen Großbourgeoisie - obwohl er seit 1944 Mitglied der KP Frankreichs war.
