Illustrated throughout by Picasso on every page with 18 mounted heliogravures and text by Picasso and Jaime Sabartès. Sewn binding in Picasso-designed lithographic paper over boards. Verve double issue devoted to Picasso's lithographs etchings and paintings which he made specifically for his Grimaldi Chateau just purchased while in the Golfe-Juan on the French Riviera with another young lover Francoise Gilot muse for most of the work here. With lithographic cover and dust jacket both designed by Picasso expressly for this issue. The manilla DJ is fairly scarce and here has kept the book itself extremely clean and sharp. Now covered in our thick mylar jacket. “In September October and November he turned out a prodigious amount of work often using boat paint and plywood or fibro-cement because supplies were short and he thought they would better withstand the château’s damp. The centerpiece was the enchanting “Joie de vivre†or “Antipolis†with a dancing Gilot in the center surrounded by frolicking satyrs and fauns… Picasso was recalling an antique past and Antipolis the ancient Greek name of Antibes†New York Times. Publisher's oatmeal cloth with orange belly-band printed in black and white no dust-jacket as issued spine and upper board lettered in burgundy; pp. '153' i.e. 151 1 2 colophon blank with the two large folding plates in pocket to rear board; slightly shaken; else a very good copy.First trade edition one of 6000 copies of this monumental work on Picasso's enormous two-panel La Guerre et la paix War and Peace - even larger than Guernica - for the deconsecrated Romanesque chapel of the the Chateau de Vallauris published five years before the chapel was officially opened to the public and instrumental in publicising the work.There were also one hundred copies of the edition de tete with an original lithograph by Picasso. To accommodate the vaulted ceilings of the deserted chapel - which Picasso aimed to turn into a 'temple of peace' - he structured the panels on thirty-two pieces of hardboard. He made over two hundred and eighty preparatory drawings several of which are reproduced here. Between 1952 and 1959 the installation 'remained largely unknown. Claude Roy's book on La Guerre et la paix . brought these large panels to wider attention before the chapel's public opening' Forest trans. Jean Cocteau who saw the work being created in Picasso's studio at Fournas - along with amongst others Francoise Gilot and Claude Roy author of the present work - wrote that 'the first impression of La Guerre et la paix is that of a nave a church; it seems that everyone who enters the studio takes off their hat. I take off my hat' ibid. Picasso left the drips of paint as they were arguing that 'one doesn't advise an unhappy person to wipe away their tears'.Goeppert 67. Alcune annotazioni a matita. Fotografia che fa parte del servizio realizzato da Yousouf Karsh su Pablo Picasso nel 1954. Splendido scatto di grande intensita' che testimonia le qualita' da grande ritrattista di Yousouf Karsh. Armeno si trasferi' da giovane, per motivi politici, in Canada dove uno zio faceva il fotografo. Fu poi apprendista a Boston presso il fotografo J. Garo. Tornato in Canada apri' uno studio proprio davanti alla sede del governo. Fu introdotto in seguito negli ambienti governativi ma il successo vero arrivo' nel 1941 quando ritrasse Wiston Churchill. Sterminato e' l'elenco dei personaggi ritratti da Karsh, politici, artisti, scrittori, ecc. Sue opere sono esposte al Moma, alla National portrait gallery di Londra, alla Biblioteque nationale di Parigi ecc.
