Binding in full grey box title and names of the author and illustrator gold-stamped on the spine boards decorated with an abstract and geometric decoration of gilt and black fillets mouse grey box endpapers covers and spine preserved top edge gilt chemise in half mouse grey box marbled paper boards slipcase edged in mouse grey box marbled paper boards contemporary binding signed Desmules. Using a process used the previous year for the illustration of Autre chose by P. A. Benoit the artist pierced the black mould giving the appearance of an empty circle in the engraving. This circle not pressed by the plate forms a white half-sphere in relief a unique and empty eye of a dismembered character very surely inspired by one of Artaud's great drawings from 1946 L'Homme et sa douleur preserved at the Cantini museum in Marseille. Rare and very beautiful copy perfectly set in a decorative binding comprising the only intaglio produced in colour by Picasso to illustrate the book. Louis Broder hardcover

Captions in French English and Russian. 26 cm. Title page and preface in French. Title translates as "111 Drawings Made in Buchenwald 1944-1945."<br> Very early 1945 publication from the year of liberation. <br> Boris Taslitzky began painting at the age of fifteen and attended the academie Montparnasse and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris between 1925 and 1933. In 1933 he joined the Association of Revolutionary Writers and Artists A. É. AR where he became general secretary of the section of Painters and Sculptors and then in 1935 he joined the Communist Party.<br> In 1936 during the presentation of Quatorze Juillet by Romain Rolland Taslitzky participated in the exhibition that brought together Picasso Léger Matisse Braque Jean Lurcat Laurens and Pinion in the lobby of the Alhambra Theatre.<br> Taslitzky was captured in June 1940 escaped in August and joined the Resistance. He was arrested again in November 1941 sentenced to two years in prison and then on July 31 1944 he was deported to Buchenwald where he manages to make some two hundred drawings showing life in the camps. "If I go to hell I will make sketches. Besides I have experience I've been there and I've drawn! . " he later said. His mother died at Auschwitz .<br> In 1946 Taslitzky exhibited his works which were inspired by the Resistance and Deportation winning the Prix Blumenthal. He was later awarded the Military Cross and Military Medal and in 1997 he received the insignia of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour under the Resistance and Deportation. The Barcelona museum has the second largest collection of Picasso paintings in the world only after the Picasso Museum in Paris. It specializes in the early years of Picasso in Spain. This issue publishes articles from the World press on the death of Picasso. Included are articles by Miguel Angel Gozalo Alfonso Barra Eugenio Montes and Andres Travesti. The 11 page article on the Museo Picasso is written by Teresa Toda and is profusely illustrated in color and black & white.<p>The second issue of May 12-18 1973 Volume 2 Number 31 is devoted almost entirely to Picasso and is profusely illustrated in color and black & white. Picasso was a contributor to the Sunday Supplement of "ABC de Madrid". Very good overall covers slightly bowed light soiling to cloth light wear to spine tips residue from sticker on spine light soiling to front endpapers interior otherwise clean and bright including the lithograph tissue guard still present binding slightly shaken. Overall a pleasing copy of a scarce book with the signed lithograph in fine condition. These two essays by Picasso were first published separately in The New York Times in 1923 and 1930. They appear here with an additional statement by its publisher Merle Armitage. Armitage started his career in the arts as a set designer in New York City and became a tour manager and theatre producer in Los Angeles. He authored over 100 books about artists and musicians and was an art collector befriending many artists including Picasso Kandinsky Klee and Chagall. After meeting artist Pasquale Giovanni Napolitano Armitage wrote a book about his Modernist style. Napolitano studied many different forms of art including painting ceramics and architectural design and he executed many architectural murals for the WPA. He illustrated several books written by Armitage and through their collaboration Napolitano became involved in set and costume design notably working on The King and I. Signed by Illustrator.
