In the original French.Complete with all ten volumes bound in five. The first complete edition of Jean Chardin's travel works with this edition bringing together Chardin"s travels in Persia and the East including material not present in the earlier partial publications of the late seventeenth century. The work provides detailed accounts of Safavid Persia including its court customs commerce and cities such as Isfahan together with observations on neighbouring regions and travel routes. Jean Chardin 1643 – 1713 was a French jeweller and traveler whose ten-volume book The Travels of Sir John Chardin is regarded as one of the finest works of early Western scholarship on Persia and the Near East in general. "Chardin’s massive work along with many other accounts of travel to exotic lands contributed to formation of one of the great streams of European knowledge leading to what Paul Hazard called "la crise de la conscience européenne" and hence to the Enlightenment. Some of his ideas for example on the influence of climate on man had a considerable impact and his work was read and commented on favorably by a number of great 18th-century figures like Charles-Louis de Montesquieu Edward Gibbon Voltaire Jean-Jacques Rousseau and William Jones." 2002BN12760Hatje Cantz Verlag 2002. 2002. Hardcover.
