Her work has feminist as well as minimalist pop art and abstract expressionistic attributes. The majority of Kusama's work presented in this two volume catalog feature her paintings a few installations small sculptures and a brief photographic documentation of one of her performances. The photographs of Kusama's extraordinary work in volume one are by Alexander Atwater and Stephen Brayne in volume two by Stephen White. Trained in the traditional Japanese painting style called nihonga Kusama was touched by American Impressionism. Fue miembro del Estado Mayor de Antonio Maceo y participó junto a él en la invasión. En 1899 publicó su obra <em>Cuba: crónicas de la guerra</em> que es un testimonio de su participación en la Guerra Necesaria 1895-1898.</p><p>En la Guerra Necesaria 1895-1898 se levantó en armas en Manzanillo el 22 de febrero de 1895 con Bartolomé Masó al frente de un contingente de patriotas en Holguín con grado de coronel. El 14 de abril de 1895 se batió con una columna española en Ciego La Rioja. Este combate se extendió hasta Los Marcano y Ojo de Agua.</p><p>Después de la llegada a la Isla del mayor general Antonio Maceo el 1 de abril de 1895 Maceo le ratificó el grado y lo incorporó a su estado mayor. Se destacó en el combate de Peralejo el 13 de julio de 1895 por el cual fue propuesto para el grado de general de brigada; pero el Consejo de Gobierno le reconoció el grado el 29 de septiembre de 1895. Días después lo promovieron al cargo de jefe de estado mayor de la columna invasora con la cual salió el 22 de octubre desde Baraguá.</p><p>Estuvo junto a Maceo durante la invasión y en toda la campaña de occidente. Se destacó en el combate de Iguará en Sancti Spíritus el 13 de diciembre de 1895; en Pinar del Río participó entre otros en los de La Lechuza Cacarajícara Rubí en dos ocasiones y Bejerano Gobernadora.Escoltó a Maceo en el cruce por el mar de la Trocha de Mariel a Majana en la noche del 4 de diciembre de 1896. Tres días más tarde resultó herido por única vez en la guerra en San Pedro donde cayó su jefe.</p><p>Por su comportamiento en el combate de Mal Tiempo el 15 de diciembre de 1895 había sido propuesto para el grado de general de división; pero no fue hasta el final de la guerra que el Consejo de Gobierno se lo otorgó con antigüedad.
