195122335EPalma de Mallorca Spain 1951. Original autograph letter signed by surrealist artist Joan Miro written on both sides of a single sheet of his personal 8 1/2†x 11†stationery printed “Son Abrines - Calamayor - Palma de Mallorca†at the upper right. Written by Miro in blue fountain pen in French translated in part: “November 3 ‘51 Dear friend I was afraid that you would have difficulties getting hold of my canvasses because you must understand that for the past year my output has been extremely limited. I absolutely had to exhibit the ‘Tronc d’arbre’ Tree Trunk which I consider to be a very important piece; apart from that Andre Breton has to repair it so as to conserve it better. Would you be so kind as to ask the press to send me as quickly as they can some “papier a report†for the lithography which I will engrave immediately. I live in the country and it is hard for me to get hold of the necessary material. After so many years I can’t find a text for ‘le Piege’ the Trap. These texts. My very best wishes Miroâ€. Fine condition. Spanish painter sculptor and ceramist Joan Miro 1893 - 1983 was one of the best known artists of the Surrealism movement which began in the early 1920s. One of its leaders was the French writer poet and anti-fascist Andre Breton to whom Miro refers in his letter. unknown books

Mourlot 1050.

Copy #51 of 75 signed by Miro in pencil on handmade paper there were also 500 unsigned copies with "letters" published as an advertising poster for the performance. Mourlot. The Lithographs of Joan Miro #1050; Picazo. The Posters of Joan Miro #86. 31" x 21". Image/sheet size 30 3/4 x 22 1/4 in. 78.0 x 56.4 cm unmatted Deckled edges.

Miro created this lithograph as an advertising poster for the modern ballet Lucifer performed by the Martha Graham Dance Company featuring Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev as guest artists. Lucifer premiered June 19 1975 at The Uris Theater in New York City as the main feature of The Martha Graham Gala.

In Martha Graham's words "Many people have asked me why I did Lucifer with Rudolf Nureyev. Lucifer is the bringer of light. When he fell from grace he mocked God. He became half god half man. As half man he knew men's fears anguish and challenges. He became the god of light. Any artist is the bringer of light. That's why I did Lucifer with Nureyev. He's a god of light. And Margot Fonteyn was such a glorious complement to him at it. Luminous as night. When I first saw Margot Fonteyn she was a great and beautiful figure." Unidentified interview with Martha Graham 1975.

Fonteyn provides background as to the Premiere of Lucifer in 1975. "It was certainly a star occasion. Tickets for the performance went on sale from $10000 down to $50. Fans wore Martha Margot Rudi buttons. Among other things the Gala may have been a sort of official celebration of the marriage between classical ballet and modern dance. Martha dominated her Gala from a Chinese chair beside the proscenium arch where she announced each ballet. The fashion designer Halston made the Lucifer costumes." It was the first performance for Fonteyn without toe shoes. 1947006771Curt Valentin 1947. Thin card portfolio. Very Good. 42 prints two of which are color stenciled by Miro. 28 by 21.5 cm. The prints are from the Barcelona series originally printed in a larger format in 1944 and 40 of these prints show the date of 1944 but we believe these are from three years later when Valentin printed a slightly abridged version from the original 50 in the series. There is no publisher or place indicated on the set here and this has caused some understandable confusion. Thus there is an OCLC listing of what we believe to be the same set with a given date of 1944. A complete set is uncommon in commerce surely because printsellers have sold off the plates individually and one can find individual black and white plates from this group on offer nowadays for several hundred dollars and the color stencil plates for north of $1000. Condition: the red folio has some fading to its color and other moderate wear. A former owner's name is written with ink in small letters on a holding flap. Light age toning to some of the plates.
[Curt Valentin] books
