Matisse and Rouveyre's homage to Apollinaire First edition thus first printing number 233 of 300 on vélin d'arches from a total edition of 350 with the chemise and slipcase in unusually nice condition. The friendship between the caricaturist and writer André Rouveyre 1879-1962 and the artist Henri Matisse 1869-1954 left a trail of art works and a correspondence of over 1100 letters. They met at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Paris in 1898. After losing touch for a while the two friends later reunited and exchanged daily correspondence as they both lived in the South of France where they had fled the World Wars. The present work is an homage to their mutual friend the writer and poet Guillaume Apollinaire 1880-1918 who famously coined the term "calligram" being a contraction of "calligraphy" and "ideogram" that is text written in a shape related to its contents rather than linearly. Each issue offered spectacular color lithographs printed by the Paris lithographers Mourlot. Early issues came in litho-printed card wrappers in boxes later volumes would be in paper-over board with litho covers. This choce allowed Teriade to feature the fresh lithographic artwork in the cover design but left the books themselves extremely fragile and succeptible to wear. Additionally the full-page lithographs have been continuous targets for art dealers looking to excise the plates. So condition seen here is quite rare with each volume preserved COMPLETE FINE with no signs of the wear and toning so commonly seen. 'The cover of Verve No. 1 is by Henri Matisse; it consists of three unmodulated colors--red blue and black--that the master cut directly from printers' ink specimen books. . This is the first illustrated edition of Ulysses though Matisse chose to supply illustrations of the Calypso episodes of Homer's Odyssey corresponding to the six episodes of the novel as his artist's response to Joyce's text which it is often said he never finished reading. He thus confounded both the publisher George Macy and most of the public on its first publication. The Limited Edition Club edition owes its existence to the lifting of the American ban on the novel in December 1933.Large 4to 295 × 225 mm pp. 363 1 6 soft ground etchings on thick paper with a total of 20 reproductions of Matisse's preliminary drawings on yellow and blue paper of different sizes 26 illustrations in all. This is copy number 1172 of 1200 signed by Matisse in pencil on colophon.100 colourful crayon and pencil lithographs on loose pages printed on thick Velin d'Arches paper at the Mourlot workshop in Paris. Illustrated frontis of medieval poet Charles Duke of Orleans 1394-1465 who taken prisoner after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Many of his poems were written during his long captivity over a 25 year period. He wrote courtly and romantic poems set in ballad and rondeau forms. The poems are lithographed in Matisse own hand with decorative borders with multiple colours. Wrappers yellowed and stained along spine and joints of front cover. Rubbing to spine edges. Stain to inner hinge of rear pastedown endpaper and sporadic stains throughout interior but otherwise in near fine and an excellent example of the livre de artiste. Matisse was encouraged to publish an artists book in conversation with friend and fellow artist Andre Rouveyre. In their correspondance Matisse included decorative transcriptions of Charles poems. Rouveyre in turn had encouraged Matisse to produce a livre de artist. "In a letter dated 3 February 1943 Rouveyre raised the idea of an artist's book comprising Charles's poems but written solely in Matisse's hand." Number 417 of 1200 copies signed by Henri Matisse a further 30 hors commerce copies were also produced. This delightful artist's book comprising 26 double-sided sheets of colour lithographs was entirely designed by Matisse including the calligraphy decorations and illustrations. The lithographs were printed under Matisse's direction by Mourlot Frères on a heavy wove paper specially produced by the Arches paperworks. René Char approached Matisse in the spring of 1946 to create a frontispiece for this collection of poetry. The publisher initially misunderstood the nature of the illustration but Matisse insisted that it would be an original engraving not a reproduction: 'my intention is to show René Char more than a simple tribute'. The woman depicted by Matisse is that of Lucienne Bernard widow of the poet Roger Bernard to whom the author pays homage in the eleventh poem of the collection entitled 'Affres détonation silence'. Vildrac explains Matisseâ€™s return to the figure as an attempt to redress the modernist gap opened between art and life. Since the figure was neglected by contemporary art concerned with the probing and reconstitution of the painting elements themselves Matisse is returning to the â€˜moral characterâ€™ of painting its human content. Like the older masters he again â€˜attunes his style to the style of the modelâ€™ and eschewing both the current archaizing and modishness he searches out with humility the grave character of the model by intelligent deduction and by imagination. Written in close collaboration with the painter this is an important statement on Matisseâ€™s Nice manner of the early 1920s.â€ Weiss 97.
