Loose as issued in the original plain card covers with the two-colour folding lithographed dustwrapper and plain glassine dustwrapper; leading and bottom edges uncut; some faint offsetting internally; a couple of trifling smudges; essentially a fine copy with the dustwrapper very slightly foxed and with the glassine dustwrapper almost imperceptibly worn at the extremities and now housed in a later custom-made card case. Number 417 of 1200 copies signed by Henri Matisse a further 30 hors commerce copies were also produced. This delightful artist's book comprising 26 double-sided sheets of colour lithographs was entirely designed by Matisse including the calligraphy decorations and illustrations. The lithographs were printed under Matisse's direction by Mourlot Frères on a heavy wove paper specially produced by the Arches paperworks. Barnes was an American chemist businessman art collector writer educator and the founder of the Barnes Foundation. Barnes made a fortune as the developer of the antiseptic Argyrol and subsequently amassed an impressive collection of more than 2000 pieces of rare art. His extensive holdings include many European and American impressionist masterpieces and early modern art including works by Cezanne Matisse Van Gogh and Picasso. His collection of 181 Renoir paintings continues to be the largest number of the artist’s paintings gathered in one location.</p><p>Barnes started the Barnes Foundation in 1922 as an educational institution with strict limits to its use and very specific rules about its operations. Barnes was known for his ambition and his artistic sensibility as well as his eccentricity.</p><p>At the Foundation he insisted that the art be displayed in a unique way exhibiting the works by their formal and expressive similarities rather than using the traditional method of grouping items by the date they were created the place of origin the type of item or its medium.</p><p>In 1931 Dr. Barnes began work on ""The Art of Henri-Matisse"" whom he regarded as “the foremost painter of the day.†Barnes first met Matisse in 1930 when the artist asked to visit the Foundation during a trip to the United States. During his visit Dr. Barnes proposed that Matisse create a mural for the Main Gallery which later would become The Dance mural.</p><p>Henry Hart first met Dr. Barnes in the early 1920s while Hart was employed as a journalist for the Philadelphia Record. The two developed a close friendship and maintained a personal relationship until Dr. Barnes's unexpected death. Henry Hart transitioned from journalism and became an editor at Scribner where he published ""The Art of Henri-Matisse."" The book was released on January 13 1933.</p><p>In early January 1933 Hart sent Barnes an advanced copy of the book which he shared with Matisse. At the time Barnes was in Nice with Matisse. Both Matisse and Barnes replied to Hart.</p><p><strong>Autograph note</strong> of Matisse and Barnes on the verso of a scenic Nice postcard addressed to Hart at his Scribner's Office in New York City:</p><p><em>""Nice January 1933. Housed in the rare original board slipcase which is in good condition. One of the 20th-century’s most desirable illustrated books combining the work of two great modern artists. A nice example with the rare slipcase. One of the most arresting collaborations in 20th-century literature. "It was a great idea to bring them together; celebrities of the same generation of similar virtuosity" Wheeler 15. The 26 beautiful full-page illustrations by Matisse accompany the text of Joyce's Ulysses including six soft-ground etchings with reproductions of the sketches on blue and yellow paper. Quarto original wrappers as issued with an original frontispiece etching of a woman's face. One of only 1000 copies produced this is number 908. Signed by Matisse below the original frontispiece etching "Henri Matisse." Fine in a fine dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed and in the original jacket. Matisse himself edited and printed this exquisite suite of 50 photo-lithographic reproductions of his drawings of women to accompany a 1920 exhibition of his work. "Daily painting sessions alternated with hours on end devoted to drawing a corrective Matisse would use from now on whenever he felt his work was in danger of losing its balance between color and feeling on the one hand and line and form on the other. He returned over and over again to a lace collar drawing it first in minute detail until he had got it by heart and could translated it at will with two swift lines 'into an ornament an arabesque without losing the character of lace and of that particular lace'. Matisse was evolving methods he would use for the rest of his life. He published fifty of these drawings in a portfolio called Cinquante Dessins to coincide with his exhibition at Bernheim-Jeune in 1920. Since the figure was neglected by contemporary art concerned with the probing and reconstitution of the painting elements themselves Matisse is returning to the ‘moral character’ of painting its human content. Like the older masters he again ‘attunes his style to the style of the model’ and eschewing both the current archaizing and modishness he searches out with humility the grave character of the model by intelligent deduction and by imagination. Alfred Barr 1902-1981 the first historian of Modern Art and the author of this volume was the first Director of MoMA from 1929-1943 when he worked as advisory director with his successor Rene d'Harnoncourt. Illustrated with 15 full-page and 80 smaller lithographs by Matisse. 4to. loose as issued in the original publisher's illustrated wrappers and cardboard box. Paris: Teriade 1946. An immaculate copy of Matisse's first collaboration with Teriade. Unlike Jazz which he was working on at the same time this work showcases Matisse's brilliance as a draughtsman. The plethora of images and the use of purple ink combine to make this a particularly pleasing book. The author Mariana Alcoforado was a Portuguese nun who conducted a passionate clandestine affair with a French soldier documented in these letters. The letters articulate the arching trajectory of her love from passion to eventual heartbreak. Whether or not these letters were actually written by Marianna Alcaforado is still a subject for debate. Folio 383 x 292 mm loose as issued in the publisher's wrappers and cardboard slipcase. Paris: Mourlot 1972. Matisse conceived of this work as an homage to his close friend John-Antoine Nau and as he had done with Charles d'Orleans and Ronsard he personally selected the poems that moved him most. As Matisse and the poet shared a common love for Martinique Matisse worked from Martiniquan models as well as Malagashan models for the illustrations. Matisse prepared the illustrations for this book in 1946 and a contract to publish the edition was drawn up with Mourlot in 1947. Matisse worked on and off on the production maquette for Poesies Antillaises from 1950 to 1953. However due in large measure to the artist's ill health at the end of his life publication was delayed until almost twenty years after his death. One of 200 regular copies. Large quarto original gilt-stamped pictorial brown cloth original slipcase. In fine condition with the rare original slipcase which is in good condition and original glassine jacket. With an introduction by Stuart Gilbert. An exceptional example most rare in this condition and in the seldom seen glassine jacket. One of the most arresting collaborations in 20th-century literature. "It was a great idea to bring them together; celebrities of the same generation of similar virtuosity" Wheeler 15. The 26 beautiful full-page illustrations by Matisse accompany the text of Joyce's Ulysses including six soft-ground etchings with reproductions of the sketches on blue and yellow paper. "One of the very few American livres de peintres issued before World War II. According to George Macy this work's designer who undertook this only American publication of Matisse's illustrations he asked the artist how many etchings the latter could provide for $5000. The artist chose to take six subjects from Homer's Odyssey. Bound in publisher's brown cloth stamped in gilt with top edge speckled brown; housed in the original tan cardstock slipcase with spine stamped in brown. 363 p. Near Fine with trivial rubbing to spine ends corners and gilt at raised relief on upper board. In a Very Good slipcase with soiling and light wear and a short repair to the seam at the opening along the bottom edge. A wonderful copy housed in a custom brown cloth solander case with morocco spine label stamped in gilt. A visually striking production which combines James Joyce's modernist masterpiece with twenty-six illustrations by Matisse including six hand-printed etchings and twenty lithographs.
