6089HENRI MATISSE 1869-1954. Matisse was a celebrated French modernist artist.ALS. 1pg. August 30 1927. N.p. An autograph letter signed H. Matisse in French. Writing to artist Charles Thorndike 1875-1935 following what seems to have been an unfulfilling visit to Thorndikes home Matisse mentions several other Modernists. In translation the letter reads: Dear Friend My journey was good and hot which suited me and the change of location has changed my disposition the cold has descended on my throat and bothers me much less than in Kermouster. I am quite upset to have been such a bad guest and very touched by all your care I do not dare think while seeing this beautiful weather about all the pleasure that I could have been able to take prolonged walks and bathing as well as good humor which would have been less unpleasant for you I would not know how to live well lying down I am touched by your kindness. I have asked Mr. Joly to instruct you to give the friends I was to see Signac and Mr. Louis Talek or Pahadi my regrets and thanks to Dr. Brandes. I have fairly good news from Madame Matisse. While waiting for the pleasure of seeing you then I will be tough I hope please accept my best friendship. H. Matisse. Signac was Neo-Impressionist painter Paul Signac 1863-1935 while Joly was probably Post-Impressionist Jean Joly 1900-1952. The recipient Thorndike was an American-born artist who lived in Kermouster in the Brittany region of France. There he entertained several significant artists of the period. The letter is in very good condition. unknown

1952132731Paris: Raisons d'Être 1952. Matisse and Rouveyre's homage to Apollinaire First edition thus first printing number 233 of 300 on vélin d'arches from a total edition of 350 with the chemise and slipcase in unusually nice condition. The friendship between the caricaturist and writer André Rouveyre 1879-1962 and the artist Henri Matisse 1869-1954 left a trail of art works and a correspondence of over 1100 letters. They met at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Paris in 1898. After losing touch for a while the two friends later reunited and exchanged daily correspondence as they both lived in the South of France where they had fled the World Wars. The present work is an homage to their mutual friend the writer and poet Guillaume Apollinaire 1880-1918 who famously coined the term "calligram" being a contraction of "calligraphy" and "ideogram" that is text written in a shape related to its contents rather than linearly. Folio. Aquatint frontispiece 6 full page and 1 smaller lithographic portraits decorative initials wrappers and chemise by Henri Matisse. Original illustrated wrappers gatherings loose as issued. With the glassine. Housed in publisher's chemise and blue slipcase. Wrappers lightly toned faint offsetting chemise boards a little bowed and rubbed some wear to slipcase extremities rubbed head and foot of fore edge just starting a very good copy indeed. hardcover

Elegantly wood Framed & Glazed with carefully coordinated quad matting. A curious relatively early letter about housekeeping at his villa and studio - a private matter - boldly signed. A very handsome presentation. Can be purchased without frame if requested.<br /> <br /> English translation:<br /> "My dear friend I have received your enclosed letter from Hannigou and I'm forwarding it to you that it might be a use. I have written asking the Notary to replace one of the beds of the villa behind with an iron one . . . and to get rid of the sofa in the workshop which like the bed has bedbugs. See to it that he responds. I would have liked to have gone to see you to tell you all this but I haven't had time today and I believe the situation is pressing. <br /> In Friendship and all the best<br /> H. Matisse<br /> 1/03/1909"<br /> <br /> Matisse was a French artist known for his use of colour & his fluid brilliant & original draughtsmanship. As a printmaker & sculptor but principally as a painter Matisse is one of the best-known artists of the 20th century. Although he was initially labeled as a Fauve wild beast by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting.1 His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.
