Loose as issued in the original plain card covers with the two-colour folding lithographed dustwrapper and plain glassine dustwrapper; leading and bottom edges uncut; some faint offsetting internally; a couple of trifling smudges; essentially a fine copy with the dustwrapper very slightly foxed and with the glassine dustwrapper almost imperceptibly worn at the extremities and now housed in a later custom-made card case. Number 417 of 1200 copies signed by Henri Matisse a further 30 hors commerce copies were also produced. This delightful artist's book comprising 26 double-sided sheets of colour lithographs was entirely designed by Matisse including the calligraphy decorations and illustrations. The lithographs were printed under Matisse's direction by Mourlot Frères on a heavy wove paper specially produced by the Arches paperworks. Matisse was enamoured of the rondeaux ballades and chansons of Charles Duke of Orleans 1394-1465. Tériade Editeur paperback

The frontispiece lithograph is signed and dated in the plate. 500 years after these poems were composed at court "Henri Matisse paid Charles d'Orléans a most elaborate homage: he selected and with his own hand copied out a century or so of Charles' poems and then adorned the manuscript with colored crayon decorations and portraits . The work was entirely planned by Matisse who designed the cover chose which portraits would be reproduced and created an original lithograph for the frontispiece. Matisse also contributed the introduction where he sums up that a portrait "appears to me as though every charcoal stroke was removing from a mirror the mist which had so far prevented me from seeing it" p. 15. Quarto. 60 full page black and white portraits and 33 colour mounted plates all by Matisse. Original pictorial wrappers. With the original glassine. Housed in the original grey cloth folding chemise within grey slipcase lettering to spine in blue. Text in French. The glue from the perfect binding has not adhered all the pages so many are loose otherwise a near fine copy. hardcover

Slipcase is beginning to split on the lower edge and there is a 3 inch piece missing from the top edge. There are a couple of of nicks to the edge about the title on the folder. The book itself is clean and well maintained. Glassine wrapper is present but yellowed. This is Matisse's last book which he designed and oversaw production of.
