Il volume ripercorre le principali tappe storiche che portano all'emergere di un moderno modello di artista, un intellettuale che si connette alla società ed ai problemi del proprio tempo, attraverso le immagini, da cui è stato possibile trarre fondate e sapienti linee di "pedagogia in re". Il lavoro ha inteso offrire il giusto risalto alle fonti "iconografiche" nella ricerca storica in educazione, per ricavare, dalla lezione del grande artista spagnolo, tracce più o meno evidenti, ma sempre incisive, di pensiero critico, di impegno sociale, e, non ultimo, di implicito intento pedagogico. Goya non è stato solamente uno dei pittori più importanti del suo tempo, ma un pensatore profondo, accostabile al Goethe letterato (T. Todorov, 2011). L'avevano compreso i suoi primi biografi, a metà del XIX secolo, tra i quali Charles Yriarte, che, nel 1867, attribuiva alle sue incisioni tutta la portata della filosofia più alta: le immagini, non diversamente dal pensiero espresso a parole, rappresentano, infatti, una riflessione sul mondo e sugli uomini.
