19962304905Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press 1996. Reissue. Reissue. Very Good. 1996 reissue of 1868 original. Two creases to wrappers. 894 pp. With new introduction and notes by John M. Taylor. "Published in 1869 Raphael Semmes's Memoirs of Service Afloat was the first major southern memoir issued after the Civil War written by the most important Confederate naval figure to emerge from the conflict. It appears here in its first indexed and professionally edited version with an introduction and notes by Semmes's biographer John M. Taylor. According to Taylor Semmes's impressive military performance would not be rivaled by any sea raider until the advent of the submarine. Commanding two cruisers first the Sumter and then the famous Alabama Semmes engineered a rout of the Federal merchant marine burning or bonding a total of sixty-four vessels with the Alabama alone before its dramatic defeat by the USS Kearsarge off Cherbourg in 1864 an event that nonetheless served to enhance his reputation - as a pirate in the North and a hero in the South. His memoir is a rollicking account of the voyages of the Sumter and the Alabama with digressions on his natural surroundings and sociopolitical topics. Written soon after the war Semmes's work conveys a zeal for the Lost Cause and an unrelenting bitterness toward the Yankees that ironically tend to obscure his own deeds of skill daring and humanitarianism. 232747London Paris and New York: Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd. Publishers to Her Majesty The Queen Undated. Hardcover. Unpaginated six of the Tuck plates plus perhaps double that number of pages of pithy observations by literary celebs on comradely excellence. Hardbound in a small decorative format popular in the late 19thC: 6x4 inch boards with wide backstrip of ornate filligree gilt on white cloth each cover finished off with narrow papered fore-edges; rather worn with an obvious repair at the head most of the plates are loose with one slightly damaged. The versos of three plates are pencil-scribbled by a child recto images unaffected. FYI very difficult to bind cardstock leaves successfully not surprising these worked free. Plates are on alkaline coated stock text on slightly acidic matte card. We cannot guarantee that all plates are present but the binding shows no telltale gaps. As is. The illustrations themselves are cliche'd flowerbeds and rural vistas the usual super-pleasant imagery destined for throwaway presentations. The author's phoney-sounding moniker is actual and googles. So should "Tuck" whose firm was one of the finest color-litho presses in England rivalling their obsessively detailed German counterparts. If you like violets and pansies you will like the item. Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd., Publishers to Her Majesty The Queen hardcover books

In this new creative project poetry is accompanied by a photographic exhibition of objects Trelles has been transformed into pieces of art. The artistic fusion of "The fish in flames" A écfrasis word of Greek origin that have been defined as "the verbal representation of a visual representation. The book represents the confirmation of a constant in his creative career a kind of synesthetic nature leading it - him and his artistic-production to a new open dialogue a game of mirrors in which we cannot discern its reverberation to the original: poems and pictures are part of the same dynamic cohabit in the aesthetic imagination and are accomplices of a dialogue that reinvents itself to each new look. There is no origin and no end since it is not the intention of the artist confine the possibilities of this dynamic but give account of animism the stories they understand and carry objects that have already been discarded and inevitably integrate with lightness to this second existence. "My paintings are open stories is a narrative painting but it works beyond the story behind the work. I'm interested in telling stories." Beautifully photographed by Johnny Betancourt. The present study explores the "serious and consistent" architecture of Enrique Triana b. Colombia 1929. The author uses the residential project "Casa Triana" House Triana to identify in it the formal and persistent elements that characterize all his projects and that reflect the strong influence of famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
